Karneval der Kulturen 2016

My last visit to Deutschland has been six (6) years - 2010 Berlin Carnival. I have been toying with the idea of visiting over that period and I finally have returned to what I can only remember as being one of the most fantastic Carnival Weekends in the world. The history and atmosphere of Berlin serves every day with a meaning of enjoyment and pleasure albeit we are only here for four (4) days, it still pounds the heart and fills the mind with entertainment and excitement.  There are always some nervous feelings when it comes to attending this carnival however, put those feelings aside and you will see the beauty and the enjoyment that can be had once you attend.

2016's installment of the Karneval der Kulturen, from what I have been told shares similarities with its predecessors however, some new elements showed its face. This also seems to bring to life more entertainment and versatility to the carnival. As usual here we aim to give our readers a full "low down" of the Carnival and where you should go for the KDK weekend if you do intend to visit Berlin Carnival.

WHEN:
You need to be in Berlin from the Thursday to the Monday. This means a maximum of three (3) days of your yearly allotted holiday entitlement for all working patrons, two (2) days if you're a real trooper and able to leave Monday morning and report to the office... work your magic!

WHERE:
In terms of country, rhetorical question really. With regards to accommodation, there is a massive plethora of hotels, hostels, rooms, Airbnb etc. etc. The transportation system in Berlin is AMAZING! From taxis, to trains and even cycling there is no short fall of abilities to travel and move around. Alexanderplatz still appears to be the local hot spot for out-of-towners.

WHAT:
The list of events apparently from what I have experienced grows every year ... and this year was no exception. To avoid being biased, we went around and spoke to paying patrons and here's what some of them had to say:

Thursday (Afternoon):- J'Ouvert

★★★☆☆ "3 out of 5 stars"
"The perfect start to Berlin Carnival weekend."

Thursday (Night):- ARRIVALS Berlin **new entry**

★★★★☆ "4 out of 5 stars"

"Vibes were high, crowd was wonderful, Great Time was had however it was way too hot, melting hot and the stupid payment system was a joke but those are things relating to the venue and not the event itself."

★★★☆☆ "3 out of 5 stars"
"A good first time event ... sexy venue, good vibes, but the long waiting for drinks plus the "car-bar-system" made it very difficult ... but a good time was had."

Friday (Afternoon):- Soca On The Beach

★★★☆☆ "3 out of 5 stars"
"Poor Organisation, but overall good vibe."

★★★★☆ "4 out of 5 stars"
"Apart from the drama to get inside, I love this venue. Party had crazy vibes."

Friday (Night):- Fire Fete

★★★☆☆ "3 out of 5 stars"
"Arrived late. Nice venue (interesting bathroom doors) and layout. For being pregnant, Patrice Roberts rocked."

★☆☆☆☆ "1 out of 5 stars"
"This party was horrible ... I need more than one line to describe the monstrosity of nonsense this event was."

Friday (Night):- Girls Love Rhythm **new entry**

★★☆☆☆ "2 out of 5 stars"
"There was no vibe for me, however it was okay but I expected more."

Saturday (Afternoon):- UP - The Berlin Carnival Rooftop Party

★★★★☆ "4 out of 5 stars"
"Good Vibe! Unexpectedly Good!"

★★★★★ "5 out of 5 stars"
"The BEST party for Berlin Carnival 2016 ... undeniably!"

★★★★★ "5 out of 5 stars"
"Great Venue ... weather didn't help the roof but oh well ... Such a Great Event ... Best event for the weekend ... the vibe was present from the start to the end ... even when eating food at the end."

Saturday (Afternoon):- The Carnival Cruise Part 1 & 2

★★★★★ "5 out of 5 stars"
"Hands down the cruises were my best parties for the weekend ... Madd."

Saturday (Night):- Carnival Glow

★★★☆☆ "3 out of 5 stars"
"Vibe was present and the artistes were good with an option for two rooms and different music but Lil' Rick should have closed off the party as he has more energy."

★☆☆☆☆ "1 out of 5 stars"
"Four years attending this event and they have added nothing to it ... it is just a party you "should" wear white and it have performing artistes."

Sunday:- KDK Street Parade - Carnival Fever

★★☆☆☆ "2 out of 5 stars"

"Started late ... Horrible Sound System: the quality of the sound was poor. No band Security!!!"

★★★★☆ "4 out of 5 stars"
"From a masquerader’s point of view, not the t-shirt section, compared to all other years there was WAY more space for the costume section with friendly but strict security (there were no stormers in the masqueraders area) and the DJs brought back what I call the "Original Berlin Vibe" (soca from all the islands in addition to the mainstream tunes)."

Sunday:- KDK Street Parade - Carnival Explosion

★★★★★ "5 out of 5 stars"
"The road was epic and the vibes was way out of control ... Gorgeous people with GREAT security and organisation ... wish I could give more than five stars ... Thumbs Up!!"

Sunday (Night):- SOCA OR DIE!

★★☆☆ "3 out of 5 stars"
"Good vibes, but the DJs didn't really deliver. Ricardo Drue gave all he had, but unfortunately had to perform his hits over and over. Teddyson John was a no show."

There were other events in addition to the above mentioned that took place, but because Berlin Carnival has become so huge in the last half century, it's able to cater multiple events running simultaneously.

Advice on where to go? You really just have to pick your poison. But we can advise on the following:

  1. Roll as a clip, move with a group, and stay in the same place. The hash tag #TeamUp comes to mind;
  2. Make sure money is in your pocket and do not be stingy;
  3. Always be willing to barter with the local alcohol merchant;
  4. Pack for unpredictable weather. Berlin in May is a unique experience;
  5. Buy your train tickets. You do not want to get fined like the foreign moron; and
  6. Take plenty photos ... the memories are worth the trip!
