In The Water

In 2014, we hosted the very 1st ARRIVALS Miami party. The goal was to get folks to arrive into Miami earlier than Thursday night/Friday for the carnival festivities. Fast-forward to 2022, and I'm happy to see carnival-goers coming into town as early as the weekend before, in time for PRE-CHECK (another signature TJJ event which started in 2021) and other events. As with most things in life, it took some time to build and develop, but Miami Carnival truly has an action packed week of fetes, concerts, breakfast parties, all-inclusives, boat rides, and more... you name it, Miami has it!

Another trend when it comes to Miami Carnival are "Weekender" events, where a promoter (or group of promoters) curate a group of events as a package deal. One price and you're covered for 4+ events. The likes of Scorch x Hybrid Miami Carnival Weekend, Miami XS Weekend (GenX, Trini Jungle Juice, Radiance Productions) and Socavivor (R.I.P Mr. WOW) are some of the popular weekenders. And this year, we were invited to experience CarnivalLyfe Weekend Miami celebrating their 5th Anniversary. They said, 7+ Events over 5 Days for 1 great price of US$100 for Early Bird VIP. So off we went into new carnival territory. Shout out to Sweet Juice for holding tings down on his very 1st Miami Carnival experience.

Tipsy Music Festival, which featured headliner Afrobeat giant Burna Boy along side the King of Soca Machel Montano, was by far the biggest event for the week. Both Kiddies Carnival and Panorama returned to Central Broward Regional Park in Broward county, whilst Miami Carnival J'Ouvert and Parade of the Bands remained at the Miami-Dade County Fair & Exposition Center. Unfortunately, the weather put a damper on things for this year's parade for the first half of the day. But fortunately, the only thing rain does stop is cricket! Catch our Facebook LIVE coverage. Oh, I was on the road with my mic, interviewing and ole talkin' with revellers too. It felt good to be back! Congrats to all of the the 2022 winners.

I miss the days when our TJJ Miami Carnival team was 10+ deep, allowing us to hit up all of the fetes on our list, as there were a few events I really wished we could have attended/covered. GENERAL INFORMATION
Duration	Wednesday to Tuesday will give you maximum feting, while still allowing time to get your Miami shopping and beach time in. Want to save your vacation dates? Then get in on Thursday (in time for Trini Jungle Juice ARRIVALS of course) and fly out Monday morning. If you're like me, and want to enjoy a Las Lap fete (or two), leave late Monday night/Tuesday. If you have the luxury to work remotely, then get into Miami the weekend before to enjoy some pre-Carnival events such as PRE-CHECK and Travis' World.
Parade Day / Last Lap	Miami Carnival Parade of the Bands takes place every Columbus Day Weekend, on the second Sunday in October. In the US, Columbus Day is always celebrated on the second Monday in October.
Currency	United States Dollar
Temperature	Visiting Miami in October is no different from the summer months, you can expect a lot of very hot and humid weather. The average daily temperature for this month is a very respectable 25°C (77°Fahrenheit), with highs going all the way up to 28°C (82°Fahrenheit) and lows down to 22°C (72°Fahrenheit).

Best places to stay	Where to stay for Miami Carnival? You have the choice of Dade (Miami) or Broward county (Fort Lauderdale). We recommend staying in the Miami area as this is where most of the carnival events take place. Midtown Miami, Wynwood, South Beach, Miami Beach and Brickell are all popular areas to stay in. Hollywood Beach area places you in between Miami and Broward.
Communication / Mobile Providers	If you'd like a local phone number in the US, you can buy a US SIM card upon your arrival in the States. There's AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon and Sprint. You should expect to pay at least US$30 plus tax. This will give you an allowance of US minutes and data.
Transportation	Book a car rental online in advance to get the best rate. Prefer not to drive? Uber or Lyft are usually less than 2 minutes away.
Flights	For your next trip to the Sunshine State, fly into Miami International Airport (MIA) or Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL). When you book via MIA, you will enjoy easy access to the city's hottest attractions as the tarmac is just 8 miles northwest of Downtown Miami. FLL is located 3 miles (5 km) southwest of the city centre of Fort Lauderdale and 21 miles north of Miami.
