SAINT LUCIA CARNIVAL 2023 PHOTOS, VIDEOS AND REVIEW

» Photo Galleries» Carnival » Saint Lucia » 2023

Helloooo Saint Lucia Carnival! Nice to see you again, coming fresh off the plane!

Although I got in too late to catch Transcend, The Carnival Ref landed just in time to capture the real kickoff to what would be another Loosah Carnival! My first event for the carnival was Escape, which was truly a mesmerizing blend of vibrant culture, infectious energy, and unforgettable moments. After all the love there, its time for U4ria 11: The Love Concert. Just imagine a sea of beautiful faces adorned in the classiest white outfits singing along to Saint Lucia and the Caribbean’s finest soca artists.

After a restful day of recharging at the peaceful, lush East Winds, accompanied by fine dining and premium cocktails, we were ready for Sa Ka Fete: In De Fond. This camp themed party was simply intoxicating with spontaneous dance-offs creating an atmosphere of pure joy and unity. The night was still young as we left for the next event, Color Me Red: Mental Day. Local and international performers took the stage, and the synergy between the artists and the audience was electrifying. Kes the Band had everyone moving to the rhythm, regardless of age or background.

Iz J’ouvert Morning! Well, not quite. Saturday morning is when all of the 'dutty fetes' take place. We rose early to the melodious birdsongs back at East Winds and embraced that morning mountain dew as we were shuttled up to MESS. If the women weren’t sweet enough, they were all coated in a layer of chocolate in this mess, bubbling along to local youth talent Merkeius Deh, and tons of other performers. Then came Soak’t, a J'ouvert party with unmatched vibe. Last year it was crazy, this year followed suit. Don’t come to this party with any stush vibe, or you won’t make it past the entrance. But it’s not one, nor two, but three j’ouvert parties we hitting, so next we head on over to Bacchanal Blocko. You’d think we’d be burnt out by now, but this party was so sweet, even when it was shut off, we held Ezra D’Funmachine hostage to sing for us and keep the vibes going. Later that night, came Remedy, loaded with babes in bikinis, the beach and banging music; the recipe for a great time.

If Saturday Morning is unofficially “J’Ouvert Morning”, then Sunday should be named “Breakfast Morning” because we hit up three breakfast parties. They were all awesome, and the organizers outdid themselves in creating parties that left an indelible mark on both locals and visitors alike, so I’ll just list them in the order we attended: Indulgence, then SunnUp, then SUNLIT. And if you missed all three breakfast parties, there was still Red Brunch where you could fill up on some fine local food and talent on the lush Lucian hillside. And the last fete before we take the road, the highly anticipated Brazen. Another beach party swarming with beautiful people, great drinks and pure vibes.

From the moment I stepped into the heart of the festivities on Carnival Monday and Tuesday (Mas On D Move), I was engulfed in an explosion of colors, music, and dance. The exuberant parade, led by a kaleidoscope of dazzlingly adorned masqueraders, showcased the essence of Saint Lucia's rich cultural heritage. Traditional costumes, elaborate headdresses, intricate wire working and bedazzling gems left everyone in awe of the artistic craftsmanship on display.

One aspect that particularly stood out was the genuine warmth and hospitality of the Saint Lucian people. Whether it was the locals sharing insights into their customs and traditions or inviting strangers to join in their revelry, the sense of camaraderie was heartwarming. It's evident that this festival is not only about celebration but also about fostering connections and embracing diversity. Lucian Carnival proves itself to be an ideal opportunity to immerse oneself in the country's soul. It provides a captivating glimpse into the essence of Saint Lucia's culture, leaving one with cherished memories that will last a lifetime. If you have the chance to attend Saint Lucia Carnival in the future, do not miss it!

Until the next one...

Temperature

The weather in Saint Lucia stays consistently warm throughout the year. The average temperature ranges from 23 to 31 degrees Celsius (84 to 87 degrees Fahrenheit). Many visitors who trek to Saint Lucia prefer to go during May and June when the temperatures reach the high 70s to 80s.

Electricity / Voltage

Walk with your universal travel adapters. Saint Lucia uses 220v, so you need a step down transformer to use any US 110v or non dual voltage device. Some resorts will offer both 220v and 110v outlets in rooms.

Best places to stay

Choosing where to stay in Saint Lucia can be difficult. The north of Saint Lucia is different from the south creating two very atmospheres. However, when it comes to Carnival you want to stay in the north side located near the capital city of Castries. This is where you'll find all the fetes and nightlife. It's the busier part of the island with resorts lining Marigot Bay to the South and Rodney Bay to the North of the capital.

Communication / Mobile Providers

Digicel and FLOW pre-paid sim cards can be purchased locally.

Transportation

Rent a car. Remember to drive on the left side of the road! Taxis are easily available at taxi stands or by telephone. All authorized taxis have a light blue number plate with a TX prefix. Before you hire a taxi, confirm the fare. Some of the major taxi services on the island include Saint Lucia Taxi Service, Saint Lucia Airport Transfers, Saint Lucia Executive, Saint Lucia Airport Shuttle, Real Saint Lucia Tours, and many more.

Flights

Hewanorra International Airport (UVF) in Vieux Fort is located 40 miles south of Castries, the capital city. George F.L. Charles Airport (SLU) is an inter-island airport just outside Castries.

Baller Lifestyle: Helicopter transfers between Hewanorra and George F.L. Charles airports reduce the travel time between the south and north of the island.

Travel Tip: If traveling from Trinidad (POS) and flights with LIAT or Caribbean Airlines are unavailable or expensive, look at booking with British Airways to land in UVF.

FOOD AND DRINKS

Cost of a 2 Piece Combo

EC$16.50 / US$6.10 for a 2 Piece Combo. Using our KFC global standard, a 2 Pc. Chicken Combo, which includes individual side & medium drink, cost $5.99 in the US.

Local Food

Green figs and saltfish is considered the national dish of Saint Lucia. You can experiment with a number of different flavors of Cassava Bread including chocolate, cherry, and saltfish. Callaloo soup is something you won’t be able to put down once you taste a spoonful, and Bay Gardens Beach Resort & Spa's SeaGrapes Beach Bar & Restaurant serves up authentic Saint Lucian food and some of the freshest seafood around.

Local Drinks

Of all the rums that Saint Lucia Distillers makes, perhaps the best known and most widely drunk is the line of Chairman's Reserve.

Have yourself an ice-cold Piton beer. It's the most popular local brand in Saint Lucia and named after the world-famous Gros Piton and Petit Piton mountains on the island, and hopefully your trip also includes a trip up these amazing peaks.

Alcohol purchase

The Pointe Seraphine duty free shopping complex is the largest in the city of Castries, conveniently located adjacent to the main cruise ship terminal, and just five minutes from both the city centre and the George F. L. Charles airport. The majority of the mas bands are drinks inclusive, and there are plenty of rum shops and road side vendors selling.
