A New Cultural Roogadoo for Carnival 2022

Where we going? BIG JAM! I can't believe this was my very first time visiting the U.S. Virgin Islands, so what better way to get introduced to a new country than via Carnival. The USVI Division of Festivals called and Trini Jungle Juice answered, "You had me at Carnival."

So many similarities, yet so many differences. For one, the V.I. accent. We need to do a Trini vs V.I. accent TikTok challenge starting with the word "Tamarind". They say "Tamon". Moving right along, these people love off Johnny Cakes (fried bake). In fact, within the USVI alone, there's a rivalry between St. Thomas (they put a slit in the middle) and St. Croix as to who has the better Johnny Cakes.

I digress, back to the festivities. What stood out the most for me is their "Big Band" sound. It's infectious and ah whole vibe by itself. After experiencing Big Band Night with the likes of Jam Band, Cool Sessions, VIBE (Virgin Islands Based Entertainment) and Pumpa, I was sold. And then I had the pleasure to see local artiste Adam O perform alongside Blind Earz... what a difference versus hearing him perform alone on tracks. Note to promoters, always book V.I. artistes with their full band when possible. You will not be disappointed.

J'Ouvert... check! Love the waterfront route. Parade... check! Coming out of a pandemic, we didn't get the full on mas experience as troupes (mas bands) didn't have enough lead time to launch. And then there was the rain, but rain only stops cricket! It was enjoyable seeing the different aspects of the mas and culture celebrated - steel bands, moko jumbies, dance troupes (especially the kids... too adorable), young designers and masqueraders.

In between all of the carnival action, be sure to enjoy the local sites (99 Steps, The Three Queens, Mountain Top - hail up Darren the Trini pan man, Drake's Seat), food and some beach therapy. St. Thomas boasts over 40 stunning beaches - add Magens Bay (has entry fee) and Coki Point to your must do list.

Desiree, Vikhe, Laura, Ian and the entire USVI Tourism / Division of Festivals team, THANK YOU for making us feel right at home. And to everyone who stopped and thanked us for being in the U.S. Virgin Islands showcasing the Carnival and festivities... we felt and appreciated the V.I. love.

Til we meet again my USVI fam! Calm.

Peace, Love and Jungle Juice-ness,
The Carnival Ref

CARNIVAL U.S. Virgin Islands - St. Thomas

GENERAL INFORMATION

Duration

Wednesday to Monday. J'Ouvert takes place Thursday morning and the Parade on Saturday. There are free (yes, FREE!) concerts every day in the Carnival Village with both local and international headliners.

Parade Day

Adult's Parade takes place on the Saturday. Mas bands are called "Troupes" and if a float is included then it is called a "Floupe".

Currency

United States Dollar

Temperature

The US Virgin Islands have a tropical climate. Temperatures throughout the year are between 25 and 30 degrees Celsius (77-86° Fahrenheit). The best time to visit the U.S. Virgin Islands is April to June, when you can expect mild weather and very little rainfall.

TJJ Recommended Hotel

Bluebeards Castle & Resort. It's an historic property dating back to the 1600's. The resort occupies an entire hilltop with spectacular views overlooking the harbor and town of Charlotte Amalie.

Best places to stay

If you want to be within striking distance to the Carnival action, you should stay in Charlotte Amalie area. If you desire having sand in your toes on a daily basis, then choose any of their popular Beach Resorts.

Communication / Mobile Providers

If you have a mainland U.S. mobile plan, it should operate seamlessly, and without any roaming charges, in the U.S. Virgin Islands. This should definitely be the case for both AT&T and T-Mobile. If you're with another carrier, call and confirm if you're good or will need one of their international/roaming plans.

Transportation

The best way to get around any U.S. Virgin Island is in a car – either your own rental or a taxi. Special thanks to Presidential Limousine (Perry and Devon) for holding us down. Top Class.

Flights

Fly into Cyril E. King International Airport (STT) located on the southwestern side of St. Thomas - approximately four miles east of the capital city, Charlotte Amalie. If traveling back to the United States, you will have to clear U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) when leaving the U.S. Virgin Islands, so give yourself extra time (3 hours to be on the safe side).

FOOD AND DRINKS

Cost of a 2 Piece Combo

US$11.99 for a 2 Piece Chicken Combo. Using our KFC global standard, a 2 Pc. Chicken Combo, which includes individual side & medium drink, cost $5.99 in the US.

Late Night Eats

Carnival Village or 'deh Village' as it is locally referred to, has lots of booths that sell local foods and drinks til the wee hours of morning. Johnny Cakes are your best friend, but be prepared for a lil wait.

TJJ Favourite Restaurants

Blue 11 (Yacht Haven Grande)
Indigo 4 (The SHOPS at Yacht Haven Grande)
Mafolie (866 feet above sea level)
Sunset Grille (Secret Harbour Beach)

Local Food

Johnny Cakes, Dumb Bread, Kalaloo, Gooseberry (Cherry) Stew, Tamon (Tamarind) Stew, Tart (coconut, pineapple, guava, mango & strawberry).

Local Drinks

Bushwacker, Painkiller. Enjoy their Cruzan® rum. Go brave with the Cane Rum.

Alcohol purchase

The majority of Troupes (jouvert and mas bands) are drinks inclusive.
