"A Gala Fund-Raising Concert"

With the show carded to begin at 8:30 PM, we arrived at 9 … a bit early or Trini time!!?? The crowd appeared eagerly and the auditorium of Queen’s Hall filled up quickly seating a mass of tourists and patrons of the arts alike. The tone was one of barely controlled excitement, with the crowd single-mindedly interested in supporting the future international success of 3Canal at the upcoming WOMEX ... an annual world music festival featuring well known international acts and considered as the biggest musical expo in the world to be held at the Seville Exhibition and Conference Centre from 22-26th Oct, in conjunction with the III World Flamenco Festival.

Opening the night was 12 The Band, a solid choice and a steady performance. Soothing, easy on the eyes and ears, they left a sweet aftertaste and an open appetite, for the crowd needed more.

Mungal Patasar & Pantar, who were on next, were undoubtedly the crowd's favourite with many people shifting seats in order to get a better view. Despite the size of the band, they stood comfortably on stage, commanding attention with a look or a sound. The audience became part of their jam session, captivated, eyes closed, hands and heads swaying in time to the symphony of instruments and vibes and despite their intention to not “steal the show”. They did it with a simply top class performance before handing over to the real highlight of the evening.... 3Canal.

Greeted with an overwhelming energy, attention, love and support the audience responded positively. Some patrons even began dancing in their seats (clearly those who were lucky enough to brave the lines and imbibe in the 15 min intermission). Even the dry mouthed in the audience were able to raise a hand and sway a head gently in time. The performance itself was supremely powerful, full of raw “Trini” attitude, accent and positive energetic ideas which as they enter the international arena should only serve to promote this island and all its talented people.
