With the beginning of a new school year, U.W.I. St. Augustine had a week of events for its students and TJJ.com decided to cover it's Chutney Fete. With a cast of established acts such as Omardath Maharaj of Spread Pal Crew and Rakesh Yankeran and the big bands Dil-E-Nadan and Karma the night looked to be an interesting one.

From kick-off, alcohol seemed to be the prevailing factor of the night as we saw a crew drinking up a storm in the car park outside. We headed through the entrance and took in some vibes from the V.I.P. So much for our fears of hearing Chutney for the whole night as the DJ's were mixing up the music like a good curry; with Chutney for buss-up shot, Soca for curry potato an channa, Hip Hop for chicken and just enough Dancehall for "Mother-In-Law" (Pepper).

Proceedings went along nicely and then Raymond Ramnarine and Dil-E-Nadan hit the stage around midnight. They showed their versatility and flipped through all different genres of music and kept the crowd going all thru their set. The band also boasted a familiar face to the Soca fraternity as Derrick "Dr". Seales provided a welcome edge to the performance.

After Dil-E-Nadan, the Masala 101.1FM crew turned the crowd upside down with a flowing routine of musical selections until Karma was ready. Mr. Ravi B. and the family came on stage with their latest hit "Rum Is Meh Lover" and mesmerized the audience. They too touched on all bits of music including a somewhat awkward rendition of Tessanne Chin's "Hideaway" by the lead female vocalist. Rakesh Yankeran & Omardath Maharaj did their thing during Karma's time on-stage (with "Ring Bang" sending the crowd in a frenzy with a burst of Confetti) before the band wrapped up shortly before 2am.

So with the crowd not ready to go home and the incessant alcohol still flowing, "Bling" of Cyberia Soundsystem took to the stage and made a valiant effort to get things going. However it was to little avail as the Campus Police were insistent that the party go no later than 2am. So our night was cut short but we made some new friends and left happy.

Two problems though... we noticed that throughout the night several "Freshers" (First Year Students) shied away from our cameras... (probably cuz Mommy and Daddy didn't know they were out limin... lol) ... and I safely had the worst tasting cup of corn soup in my life after the fete... not to be crude, but it actually "somehow" tasted like a burnt up "pelau" :-(

Anyway, we enjoyed ourselves and look forward to bringing you more of the U.W.I. festivities in the coming weeks.
