From the time I heard John Legend was coming to Trini, I was elated. I took to Twitter to confirm that it wasn’t a rumour and saw that he replied to someone saying “Yes, I'm coming to Trinidad in June. Can't wait!” No doubt about it, I was going to be present! The night before the Labour Day Holiday likeminded Trini’s came out in their numbers to see Legend in action. Even Swine Flu couldn’t keep fans away from the soulful R&B crooner, though some made sure to take the precaution of wearing surgical masks.

We reached the Oval just as the opening acts were finished performing and the audience was anticipating the headlining act. The crowd was mellow but in good spirits as they patronized the bars and those in VVIP got in on the all inclusive food and drink action.

When the superstar hit the stage at 1:00 am excited ladies clamoured to the front and couples held each other closer. He opened with “Used To Love U” and followed with favourites from his repertoire including “Satisfaction”, “It’s Over”, “Let’s Get Lifted”, “Alright”, “So High”, “Stay With You”, “Refuge (When Its Cold Outside)”, “Good Morning”, “Can’t Be My Lover”, “Take Me Away” and “Green Light”. He finished on a high note and left the audience still wanting more. He obliged returning to the stage and performing “Ordinary People” for the encore.

Bearing in mind that this is a man who has produced three albums of hit after hit, we think he did a good job of performing selections from each album in the allotted time. Throughout the performance the crowd remained mellow but appreciative. One lucky lady got the chance to go up on stage and “Slow Dance” with John during the performance of that song.

We overheard a particularly entertaining conversation at the end of the night:

Young girl to older woman: “Pat was that you climbing up on the fence taking pictures?” Older woman, smiling from ear to ear: “Yes, yes it was”.

We thought this was truly an indication of John’s wide appeal and that his fans were fully satisfied with his performance. John himself Tweeted after “Wow. Show in Trinidad was off the chain! Thanks to everybody who came. Can't wait to come back.” We can’t wait for you to come back either John!
