With the official start of summer right around the corner, the folks at Island Elite and Kingston 21 brought us the "Big Phat Fete - Caribbean Lifestyle Summer Edition" to kick off the summer party season. Billed as Miami's favorite Caribbean party, this session of BPF was geared to offer the best of both worlds for Reggae and Soca lovers. The Soca Garden featured some of Miami's hottest soca DJ's, including DJ Rebel, Private Ryan and Selecta AJ with the Reggae Lounge featuring a lineup of Walshy Fire, Eccentrix, Aderenalyn and Addy Gambino.

Now, we at TJJ do our best to keep it real for you, we haven't been to BPF with any frequency since they moved to 94th Aero Squadron, so its taking us a while to get used to the venue. Change is not always a bad thing, and the new indoor/outdoor configuration is geared to enhance the party vibe ... almost like being in two different venues at the same time. However, upon reaching the party around 12:45am, we were disappointed to see that the Reggae lounge was vacant except for some DJ equipment. It seemed that the promoters either chose to shut down the Reggae lounge real early, or just not open it up at all. On this night, all of the action was at the interior bar and outside in the Soca garden which was packed.

The main attractions of BPF have not changed .... great music, great ambience and plenty familiar faces. The musical selections were lethal and even when the music buss temporarily around 2am due to an equipment malfunction, the combination of DJ Rebel and Private Ryan more than made up for the inconvenience by treating us to a sizzling mix of back in times Dancehall and Soca that had the crowd going mad.

It was great to see that this monthly South Florida staple, the longest running monthly Caribbean fete in Miami, is still going strong after 5 years and its resilience is well deserved. Big up to Island Elite, we promise to be back real soon.
