Bajan Captures Groovy Soca Monarch Title

Biggie Irie at 2007 Soca Monarch FinalsHistory was made early Saturday morning when the first non-Trinidadian captured one of the coveted International Soca Monarch titles.

Bajan entertainer Biggie Irie performed his hit Nah Going Home to edge Trinidadian Soca Artist Mr Chucky out of the Bmobile International Groovy Soca Monarch title.

Placing third was Nadia Batson whose Caribbean Girl created quite a stir; in fourth position was defending Monarch Shurwayne Winchester with the extremely popular Alequa.

Winning the 2007 International Soca Monarch was the Iwer George, who captured his third Soca Monarch title (2002 & 2003) with Fete After Fete.

Nadia Batson, who went into the finals as the winner of the semi-final round placed second with My Land featuring Kes. Defending Double Soca Monarch Shurwayne Winchester placed third with Open the Gates and Patrice Roberts placed fourth with Light It Up.

The performances in the International Soca Monarch competition were laced with confetti, elaborate costumes and choreographed dance routines as the twelve finalists tried to capture the title.

The results in the Bmobile International Soca Monarch and Groovy Soca Monarch competitions are as follows:
