Rapso Festival Offers ‘Rootical’ Mother’s Day BrunchBrunch On Mother’s Day Is High Point Of Festival Of Rapso And The Oral Traditions

May 11, 2007 - Port of Spain, Trinidad... On Mother’s Day, Sunday May 13, 2007 rapso artists and fans will gather for a salute to mothers and a rapso thanksgiving at the Rapso Brunch/Lime to be held at the YWCA building on Alexandra Street from 10.30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. This newest feature of the Festival of Rapso and the Oral Traditions offers a day of performances by some of the nations leading rapso artists and is the culmination of two months of training workshops and free concerts. Brother Resistance, rapso icon and founder of the festival, views the brunch as a high point of the festival bringing workshop graduates, festival performers and patrons together. “Everybody is invited to bring their mother to this rootical approach to Mother’s Day,” he said.

Admission is free and a variety of local foods will be on sale. The day will be punctuated with live performances by the Network Rapso Riddum Band featuring Brother Resistance and Karega Mandela, Sister Ava with Pamberi Steel Orchestra, Codrington Pan Family, Northwest Laventille Folk Performers, Black Lyrics, Omari and 3 Canal.

Another new addition to this year’s calendar of events is the International Rapso Conference which takes place today, Friday May 11, 2007 at the National Museum and Art Gallery from 9:00 a.m. The conference is in commemoration of the 200th anniversary of the abolition of the slave trade and focuses on assessing the contribution of rapso to the cultural landscape of the Caribbean. Participants will enjoy a keynote address by Ms Carol Boyce-Davies, Professor of African- New World Studies and English at Florida International University along with a feature address by renowned author, Earl Lovelace.

This year the Festival of Rapso and the Oral Traditions has enjoyed consistent support and positive responses from both artists and fans. Children’s Story Time and Women of the Oral Tradition were very well received by their audiences. Brother Resistance is particularly pleased with Breaking New Ground that was held at the Little Carib Theatre last Sunday. “Every one of the participants exceeded the expectations they created during the workshops,” Resistance said.
