USVI Government Passes Resolution in Honor of Frederick A. Morton Jr., "Mr. Tempo"Tempo, the Caribbean’s premier entertainment network held a press conference on June 8th at the Reichhold Center for the Arts in St. Thomas, U.S.V.I. in anticipation of its Rock de Tempo event on June 9th. At the conference the USVI Government through former Territorial Senator Adlah Donastorg presented Frederick Morton Jr., Sr. Vice President, General Manager and Founder of Tempo (and USVI native) with a plaque commemorating Resolution #1707 passed in his honor in 2006. The Resolution serves to formally commend Morton for his outstanding achievements and his contributions to the people of the Virgin Islands and the Caribbean. The Resolution outlines Morton’s vision and highlights the events that made it possible to bring Tempo to fruition.

Morton’s St. Croix, Virgin Islands upbringing fostered an immense passion for the region, its culture, traditions and people. An extensive education including a Bachelor’s Degree in Economics and a Master’s Degree in Law from Rutgers University and a Master’s Degree in Public Administration from Columbia University, provided him with the necessary tools to fulfill his dream of bringing the Caribbean, which he affectionately refers to as “Earth’s last Eden”, to people everywhere.

Morton’s highly impressive legal career began with a position at the prestigious law firm Simpson Thatcher & Bartlett, where he represented numerous Fortune 500 companies. Morton later went on to become Corporate Counsel for Johnson & Johnson and then joined Viacom Inc. where he quickly rose to Chief Litigation Counsel. Morton then became Deputy General Counsel of Business and Legal Affairs for MTV Networks’, a division of Viacom.

While working with MTV Networks, Morton maintained his passionate immersion in Caribbean culture and refined his vision of elevating that culture to center stage. He knew, with an almost prophetic sense, that he would one day be able to combine the two and create a groundbreaking venture. Tempo was the answer to his vision.

Just as Morton intended it, Tempo has become the ultimate platform for the entire Caribbean experience. Tempo has successfully bridged the space between islands, and continents, bringing the culturally rich and trendsetting Caribbean community to the entire world. Tempo continues to provide innovative programming dedicated to music, culture, food, and social awareness; a true celebration of Caribbean life beyond entertainment, rising to inspirational, progressive and educational.

Dubbed, “Mr. Tempo” Morton’s able leadership, guidance and inspiration allowed Tempo to successfully launch “ONE LOVE” a pro-social campaign designed to positively effect, and change the lives of Tempo viewers. As part of “ONE LOVE”, Tempo has designed programs, campaigns and messaging to address HIV/AIDS Awareness and Prevention, Disaster Relief, Creative Arts Education, Youth Violence Prevention and much more.

Through Tempo Morton has successfully realized his vision while embarking on a journey to unite the Caribbean, challenging Caribbean people everywhere to stand “united in an expression of unconditional love.”

Resolution #1707 was passed in recognition of the preceding achievements and to honor and commend an extraordinary native of the USVI: Frederick A. Morton Jr. who continues to make significant contributions to the people of the Caribbean and the world.
