WE SOCA MUSIC

:: TJJ Insight to 2006 Carnival Season ::

We reach de stage, we warming up ... throw your hands up in de air ... okay, we starting this review in reverse order since the TJJ Soca Crew was too busy organizing their Carnival stories this year to get the review out before the season. We will still give you the facts and our 2 cents.

In spite of the song similarities to Enya's Caribbean Blue, Machel Montano and Patrice Roberts "Band Of The Year" won Road March 2006. Band Of The Year was written by Kernel Roberts and played 334 times on the road on Carnival Monday and Tuesday. It was by far the People's Choice, with Shurwayne Winchester taking 2nd place with "Ah Cyar Wait" which played 98 times followed by Machel Montano's "Scandalous" playing 91 times. Machel & Patrice agreed to give the 2006 Road March prize to Kernal Roberts. The producer and songwriter is dedicating the 2006 winning to his father - the late Aldwyn 'Lord Kitchener' Roberts aka de 'Grandmaster'. Positive vibes.

What we particularly like this year was the wide variety of Soca music. There was something for everyone - young and old. It was not just about jump and wave, when you think about slow/mid-tempo tunes like Chucky's "See You", Patrice Roberts & Zan's "Always Be" and the 2006 Groovy Soca Monarch Shurwayne Winchester with very popular tune "Don't Stop". What about new comer,Tobago-born David Reid? His video for the song "Memories" was on heavy rotation on Synergy and MTV Tempo yet Reid is largely unknown -- in T&T, that is. We never knew there were so many new or upcoming Soca artists out there - and real talented too! Big shout out to all upcoming artists, keep on doing what you doing. We'll mention some of the names, so you can listen to their music on our Soca Music page. Artists like Soca Johnny, Staceylicious, Mystro D, Red Cherry, Kevon Carter, Hunter, Metric, Fryktion and de whole rest of the camp.

On the other side of the fence, we wanted to give much love and respect to the generals of the Soca game today. We talking about artists that's been doing it for a minute now, that we have admired since way back in da day. It's great to see their success, especially when we think about all the doors they have knocked on and pavements walked to reach where they are today. Artists like Shurwayne Winchester (the reining Groovy Soca Monarch / International Soca Monarch champ), Bunji Garlin, KMC, Destra, Maximus Dan, Denise Belfon and Machel Montano. Yes, Machel ... the Taipan of Soca, he truly knows how to perform and entertain! Alternative Concept Concert 4... just incredible! Also, be sure to check out our coverage of the Groovy Soca Monarch / International Soca Monarch 2006.

It was another great year for collaborative efforts. Of course, "Band of the Year" was probably the biggest. Some of the loved combinations for 2006 ... Alison Hinds & Machel - "Roll It (Remix)"; Benjai ft Machel Montano - "Amnesty"; Explainer ft. Maximus Dan - "All Inclusive"; Ms Alysha & Faye Ann Lyons - "Party"; Patrice Roberts & Zan - "Always Be"; Shurwayne & Calypso Rose - "Tempo" and Zan ft. Machel Montano - "The Heart of A Man".

How about Reggae meets Soca .... Bunji & Prophet Benjamin with "Fire Fi Dem" and KMC ft Bounty Killer - "3 Miles (Remix)" OR Chutney meets Soca ... Bunji Garlin & JMC Triveni's "Doi Festival" and Destra & Dil-E-Nadan's "Aur Chale (Remix)". All big tunes. Soca lovers really embraced Trini's local reggae artists during the Carnival season with love.

There you have it folks... TJJ's Soca Crew 2 cents. Before we run, somebody say "Ting 4 D'Road", somebody say "Ting 4 D'Road" ... we gotta large up Mista Vybe for giving us this big tune to jump up to. Lots of folks might think de man is a one hit wonder, but he's definitely not new to this ... allya remember "Up" on the Takeover Riddim - yeah, the same riddim as Machel & Doug E Fresh's 2005 hit "We Not Giving Up." Now, speaking of one hit wonders, we are waiting for 2007 to see what Trini's new boy sensation group, Surge, will bring. "In Your Timin' Girl" was a big tune, especially with the ladies for 2006. Waaaay, we almost forget to mention Russell Cadogan. Who you ask? He's one of the lead singers for Imij & Co. Still guessing? Okay, we go say it like this ... "De gyal dem readdddddy and dem lookin so niceeeeee, me wha rock steadddddy with it ... shake it, shake it ... so dem how to work it ... I want a Big Buttom Gal for me to wine up on....". "Big Buttom Gal" is definitely rated as one of the most loved tunes for 2006.

Rupee, you were missed. Congrats on your new baby. Onika Bostic, your warm laughter lives on with us. Thanks to Machel Montano for his remake of Onika's 2005 tune "I Love Carnival" giving us "Forever". Our pores raise everytime we hear the tune ... happy tears. Rita (Jones) sing us out of our insight of the 2006 Carnival Season with "Carnival Feeling" ... "Do you get this feeling ... show me how you feel when it's Carnival time!" We gone.

:: TJJ Insight to 2005 Carnival Season ::

For the 2005 Carnival season, we cannot even begin to explain just how much Soca... Ragga Soca, Sweet Soca, Rum Soca out and mashing up both the airwaves and fetes. The small island artists not joking around either, especially Jamsey P and Mini Priest with their respective big, big hit tunes Nookie and Body Water. These two tunes combined with Blackie's Ah Hook guarantee to mash up any party... whether folks are in a drunken or sober state!

As a man once said, riddims bussin' like bamboo! Take Over (3 Suns' Off The Chain), Stinging Neckle (KMC's Pinky & The Brain), Pot of Gold (Benjai, Scarface & Bunji 's Clear De Way), Immediate (Bunji Garlin's Right Now), Escape 2 Soca (Machel & Tony Curtis' What A Feeling), Tear Drop (Dawg-E-Slaughter's Your Body Is Calling) riddims.

All the bands sounding good, and the big Soca artists doing their thing, night after night. We especially loving both Atlantik and Imij & Company's energy. Machel & Xtatik taking on a new direction this season, with more concert like performances. Lots of new styles and guest artists in the mix as always, and if you attended either of their Alternative Concept 3 shows, you will know exactly what we are talking about! Machel mentioned that he would personally like other bands to grow and shine, so people can see that there's a lot of other talent out there besides Xtatik. Nevertheless, he stated that this does not mean that Xtatik is giving up! Hence, the recording of his hit tune with Doug E Fresh, We Not Giving Up.

Aye, we gone. Look for the Trini Jungle Juice Team in de fete, on de road, or in a band! Remember to smile and look pretty when is time for photographs! As KMC say, "Last year for Carnival was de first time I play Mas..." Check out Weekly Top 10 Local Chart on the homepage for what's currently hot!
