Known as the reigning “Queen of Calypso” for her enduring charisma and unflinching voice, CALYPSO ROSE is bringing a taste of the Caribbean to her debut at the Arsht Center’s Knight Concert Hall - to help launch Carnival in Trinidad & Tobago, which is February 11&12, 2013.
CALYPSO ROSE, the first female Calypso artist to receive acclaim in Trinidad and Tobago during the peak of Calypso music, is most noted for her hit song “Fire in Meh Wire,” which has become a nationally recognized Calypso anthem. In addition to this legendary hit, the artist will perform songs from her longstanding career including “Israel by Bus,” the world music chart-topping lead single from her latest album Calypso Rose.
McCartha Lewis, CALYPSO ROSE, was born in the small island of Tobago in the West Indies. She started singing at the age of 15, and for over 50 years has been trailblazer in a male-dominated music genre. CALYPSO ROSE was the first woman to win the coveted ‘Calypso King’ crown in Trinidad & Tobago. Organizers quickly changed the title to ‘Calypso Monarch’, which Rose went on to win for five consecutive years.
The Caribbean crooner has taken Calypso music all over the world with her witty lyrics and infectious tempo. She has shared the stage with some of the biggest international stars, including Michael Jackson and Bob Marley.
