March 21st marks World Down Syndrome Day; this year’s theme is “right to work”. As part of our continued commitment to spreading the awareness of Down syndrome, the Down Syndrome Family Network will be hosting our 2nd annual conference on March 21st in Trinidad and 22nd in Tobago. The event is open to persons of all abilities.
We are honoured to have as our keynote speaker, Down syndrome Self Advocate, Karen Gaffney. Karen was born with Down syndrome; she is an open water swimmer who has completed nine miles across Lake Tahoe, swam in the Maui Channel, and was part of a relay team to cross the English Channel. Gaffney also graduated from Portland Community College with an Associate of Science degree and a Teacher’s Aide certificate. She is the President of the Karen Gaffney Foundation; an organization dedicated to full inclusion for people with Down syndrome and others with disabilities in schools, families, the workplace and the community.
