This course is designed to give an individual a good understanding of how photovoltaics works: its current day applications and limits, knowledge of the different types of systems as well as all equipment involved and a good understanding in PV design, installation and maintenance of the system.

This course is designed for people with a basic electrical background. At the end of the course, students will:

1) Understand photovoltaics and solar energy.

2) Comprehend the terminology and equipment associated with this specialty electrical trade or green collar job.

One component of the course gives students hands on experience under laboratory conditions of situations that mimic working in the field.

This course is geared to people with math/physics passes that have a keen interest in solar energy. It offers a first step in educating keen individuals interested in solar energy, its benefits and limitations.

How this course adds value to your life:

There is growing demand for technical skills and capacity building in the field of sustainable energy in the Caribbean.  This is especially ture with the islands further up the Caribbean chain where electricity costs can get as high as 50cents/Kwh, which amounts to some of the most expensive electricity in the world. These higher prices have created a demand for the installation and maintenance of the photovoltaic systems.

In Trinidad this field is still in its embryonic stage but there are niche applications being used currently. Global climate change is driving renewable energy policy being drafted in Trinidad. This will result in an increase of growth in the renewable energy sector in the future. This course hopes to fill the demand for this new and growing field.
