The Inter-School Dragon Boat Regatta is on once again, and TJJ has been specially invited to cover the competition for the second time around. Now it’s not the usual party type event that we are used to covering, but hey we versatile and game for anything. So Dragon Boat Regatta here we come!

We arrived down at the sunny peninsular of Chaguaramas around 10 AM ready to see the revelry, hard teamwork and healthy competition that this sport entails. Most of the participants are secondary school girls and boys, and then there are the Alumni competitors who have their own category in which they compete.

During the course of our stay, we watched teams battle in heat after heat, all trying to secure a position in the finals by setting top times. While that battle took place on the waters, teams and supporters on land waved flags, cheered their fellow team mates on and some even had rhythm sections going, showing strong support and participation.

The 200 meter races went by fast and furious, wrapping up at a little after 3 PM. Not long after the judges were all ready to announce the results and award the winners. At this point a large crowd of supporters and participants all anxiously gathered, waiting to hear what the forecast of results were going to be. The official results were as follows:

Shortly after the prize distribution we departed with three things. The first was a slight tan, the second was the many memories of the day, but it’s the third one that was the strangest ... we were subconsciously hearing the repeated beat of that DRUM!!! Yes the one used to help keep the timing of the paddlers while rowing. You know the Boom … Boom … Boom!!! Hopefully it wears off soon J In closing we would like to congratulate all the teams that participated, as well as the overall winners. There it is again ... Boom … Boom … Boom!
