With the parade kickin off at 9:30 am, grand marshals Benjamin and Peter Bratt led the way from the corner of 24th St. and Bryant all the way to Mission and 17th St. We linked up with our TJJ contact Jonathan Mack to get us the best seats in the house, and sure enough he did just that by getting us all access during the parade (and getting the officers off our backs by explaining we're media) and backstage passes. So you might be asking, "What there is to say 'bout San Francisco Carnival?" Seeing as California isn't a Caribbean state, there's a lot to say about SF Carnival. This one takes the cake culturally, and has been doing that (much to our surprise) for 32 years. The carnival was originally established by a group of local musicians and artists who were eager to get the Caribbean and Latin American culture and vibe to San Francisco. Since the beginning this event has been sponsored by San Francisco Cultural Arts Traditions (SFCAT), a new non-profit organization dedicated to uniting people in the celebration of cultural arts traditions to benefit the community. Its integrated internationally from Panama to Bolivia, Trinidad to Jamaica, people celebrate their culture from all over and share their pride in their native attire. About 70 bands participated in the actual road march, and an estimated 400,000 were on sight experiencing the diversity that San Francisco offers through the food, music, clothing and languages.

As the parade ended we were left off at mission wonderin whats gonna come up next..? As we started walkin down towards Harrison St. we were already hearin the excitement from a distance. As we turned onto the street we instantly felt like we walked into a party, bumpin into people with drinks in their hands, live performances and retail vendors as far as the eye can see. The smells of jerk chicken, BBQ ribs, Thai food, and Latin American food and pastries made our stomaches growl. And seeing as we are two very indecisive people, we decided to experience SF Carnival to its fullest and had a bit of everything.

Experiencing San Francisco is an A+ in culture. It showed us that even though all of these people are considered immigrants, they stand united and are proud of who they are and this is what the true meaning of the San Francisco Carnival is.
