Fashion Week 2010 dubbed Cosquelle Meets Couture was the third installment of the event in Trinidad in Tobago. As with previous years fashion enthusiasts and supporters of the arts were excited to see what our designers had been up to since last year. We were ready to be wowed by the local talent that we know exists and thrives here. This year, as in the past, the shows were all marked with highs and lows. Without harping too much on the negative aspect of the designs it can be said that some designer’s aesthetic preferences are better suited to runway shows in their bedroom than to a forum that is supposed to be representative of what our fashion industry has to offer.  That being said these designers must be commended for their pluck. There were many bright spots over the week however and these designers left us wanting more. The sold out audience at the Hyatt was especially appreciative of the lines that took risks but were wearable and cohesive.

On Wednesday night the show’s theme was Cutting Edge Caribbean. This night was dedicated to funky, young, fresh designs and some designers hit the mark spot on.  Claudia Pegus opened the show with her CPFS line that featured bikinis with metallic accents and tunics embellished with jewels. This was followed by Mario Lewis who used skateboarders to highlight his line that included denims and cotton basics. For the second year America’s Next Top Model winner McKey Sullivan was part of FWTT and made her first appearance walking for Joanne Jordan’s Contours line. Radical men’s presentation livened things up with brightly coloured shirts and patterned button downs paired with linen trousers and a surprise performance by Swappy who had the crowd moving with his C2k10 hit “Gyal Say”. There was also another performance that night from Kimba Sorzano who sang his melodic hit “Maria” during Earthmember4life by Ashley Christmas’s presentation. Ecliff Elie presented an African inspired line suits while Winston Jack’s apparel was rasta influenced.

It can definitely be said that cohesion in presenting a collection is a concept that has not yet been grasped by all of our local designers. By and large it seems to be their preference to demonstrate their versatility. This was definitely evident on Wednesday as designers including Korine and Rachel Ramyard and Petra Best Moore attempted to present a little of everything they had to offer. Others did this with additional drama such as Gregory Singh’s finale that included theatre stars Penelope Spencer, Raymond Choo Kong and the designer himself who appeared in denim cut off’s with rainbow coloured thigh high socks and knee high, patent leather platform boots. Ian Dominique LaRoche was not to be outdone with his use of mouth guard contraptions and exercise belts as accessories on his models. This definitely provided a lot of discussion topics for the audience that included the who’s who of the fashion industry including former Miss Universe Wendy Fitzwilliam and her son Ailan. We even heard one patron exclaim “THAT is fashion!” during Francis Hendy’s presentation. Clearly, whether people loved or hated what was offered on Wednesday night they left the Hyatt with lots to comment on.
