On Saturday night patrons at Fashion Week Trinidad and Tobago were treated to designs under the umbrella of New World style. The show opened with Peter Elias who displayed a collection of floral patterned, bohemian designs that were accented by bold accessories that have become his trademark. Models then took the runway outfitted in DAV Originals’ designs by Dawn Victor. These were generally casual pieces in bright colours and colour block patterns. Donna Pemberton showcased African inspired clothing in earth tones. While Rodney Alexander made use of hand painted patterns on bright coloured cloth to execute his designs. Sonia Noel’s Mariska’s displayed a variety of styles mainly in black and white and fuchsia with geometric patterns and cut outs as a signature. CIA’s Fashion Designs by Lucia Joseph presented crochet clothing and swimwear.

Marvin warner’s TheMudtoneProject presented casual and comfortable looking outfits in bright colours and this was the first time for the week that maternity wear was shown on the runway. Camille Harding’s Mille Wearable Art’s runway show included half naked men in wrap skirts. Of course the ladies in the crowd were appreciative for the gape. Charmaine Spicer presented her line Spice Rack designs which incorporated floral patterns in cool, casual designs. Saleem Samuel once again brought the drama to the runway with printed outfits and eveningwear. One of the highlights of the night was the presentation of designs by students from the Caribbean Academy of Fashion Design (CAFD) a part of the University of Trinidad and Tobago. The students showed of their talent and versatility and it was encouraging to see that young talent is being nurtured to keep the local fashion industry growing.

As with other nights the venue was at if not over capacity but the enjoyment of fashion again trumped the complaints. The designers kept the crowd entertained with the wide variety of looks displayed on the night. There was definitely a fusion of different styles with a Caribbean twist that made them appealing to the packed crowd. The enthusiasm of the crowd brought to mind a quote by designer Ali Hewson “People say fashion is frivolous but in it’s own way it can change people’s lives.”
