Socavivor, one of the most anticipated shows for the Caribana season was host to a crowd of thousands at the Wild Water Kingdom on Caribana Saturday 2010. A full day of palancin on de road was not enough for some and for those who missed out on the parade; there was no better place than Socavivor to get that fix.

3Veni opened up the soca segment of the show performing their hit chutney-soca songs as well as many other 2010 carnival numbers. Toronto’s soca monarch queen, Nakisha Toussaint was next in line and was followed by Freedom, one of Toronto’s talented upcoming artistes. Freedom, who is of Haitian decent, gave a spectacular performance of his new single ‘Move on’ as well as some of his other work which included a tribute to his home island of Haiti.

Finally the moment arrived; the moment everyone was waiting for. It was time for the king of soca and his HD family to send the crowd into a mood of pure ecstasy. Machel and the entire HD family thrilled the crowd with their energetic performances. First we were at the Gal farm with Shall Marshall and next you know we were out on de road with Zan.

Machel’s repertoire led us down memory lane to the inception of his career in the time when he was ‘too young to soca’ to a more recent time when he could jam on de highway with Patrice Roberts. It’s a good thing Machel isn’t too young to soca anymore because there’s no way he would have been able to handle Patrice when her waistline started rolling. His dancers, dressed in net tops and leggings, revealing the outline of their well toned, flexible bodies stunned the audience with their jaw dropping gyrations and eye-popping movements.

You know we don’t need Lucozade when Skinny Fabulous hits the stage. The Vincy carnival king did a splendid job as usual and had everyone jumpin on the spot. Even Kardinal Offishall joined in the fun with Machel on stage. Twas a great night indeed! The different islands were well represented but Trini and Guyanese flags seemed to be present in the majority, both at the front of the stage and throughout the rest of the crowd. Soca shows are absolutely amazing. That’s the one time everyting all right and everybody just come out to have a good time.

The Socavivor experience was well worth the drive to Wild Water kingdom and the night was one where everyone went home with their hunger for a good time more than satisfied. Even those who had to thief their wine still had a good time at the fete. Wah u say TJJ family? Every day should be a soca day. We cyah go wrong wit that!
