Last Sunday evening the masses congregated stage side at Movie Towne’s Fiesta Plaza for one of the final events of the Bmobile Hot Ticket Summer promotion. This event was a clear example of the mobile company’s effort to not only give back to its customers and the general public but to the country’s entertainment sector as well.

The Sunday evening affair aptly titled “Stars of Bmobile” showcased Tobago born, International Groovy Soca Monarch Shurwayne Winchester and his band Y.O.U. in a scaled down intimate setting. Unlike many of his Carnival performances, Winchester had the unique opportunity to get up close and personal with his fans and the audience got to experience this talented local act in a friendly, cozy scenario.

MC for the evening Sunny Bling truly lived up to his name by dressing in a bright green shirt, with matching bright green sunglasses and an enormous gold chain. The always entertaining host proceeded to introduce the dynamic Winchester who started his set crooning his Groovy Soca Monarch winning songs “I Wanna Make Love” and “Don’t Stop”.

Shurwayne and Y.O.U. frontline singer Prestan commanded the Fiesta Plaza space with authority, inspiring the audience to sing along with them as they performed their originals as well as major Dancehall hit tunes such as Gyptian’s “Hold Yuh” and Vybz Kartel’s “Clarks”. Shurwayne and band displayed their versatility with various musical genres with their renditions of “Your Love” by Nicki Minaj, “Fireflies” by Owl City and the monster hit “Billionaire” by Travis McCoy.

The band’s set was in no way short of memorable moments. The crowd stood in amazement as vocalist Prestan serenaded one lucky female in attendance. Also notable was the band’s ‘old school’ Reggae showdown in which one brave member of the audience took up the challenge of singing with Shurwayne and company.

The daring patron, Shawn Pierre admitted that he was actually an aspiring artiste who went by the sobriquet “T&T Yellow Man”. When asked about his brief moment onstage with the Y.O.U. crew he shared, “It was a wonderful experience, I felt real love and I got to live out my dream for a few minutes of my life”. For his vibrant acapella version of a Barrington Levy classic he walked away with a brand new Blackberry smart phone courtesy of Bmobile.

Amidst all of the festivities, Bmobile manned a booth to the side of the performance area featuring hi-tech touch screen information towers containing valuable facts for both pre-paid and post-paid customers including Blackberry users. The information covered such topics as call rates, roaming, mobile internet and GPRS.

Shurwayne took a moment to test the crowd on their knowledge of Classic Soca music e.g. songs from Black Stalin and Lord Nelson. He later brought things forward with his 2010 smash “Murdah” and an arsenal of modern day Soca favourites including the mega Road March tune “Palance”.

He ended the set by giving the audience a taste of his new 2K11 track entitled “We’re number 1”.

That night several patrons claimed that Shurwayne and his energetic, captivating brand of entertainment were a refreshing departure from the more subdued acts that were usually presented during dinner time at the venue. It is safe to say that this special evening of performance and prizes left all in attendance wanting more and curious as to when the next “Stars of Bmobile” concert would be held and who would be featured.
