After weeks of continuous rain in Trinidad, Trini Revellers thought it a good idea to have their 2011 Carnival Band Launch indoors at the Zen Nightclub.  And with a true tale of irony it was the only night within weeks that it did not rain!  So yuh boy and the rest of the TJJ family were off to see how Trini Revellers were going to infuse England from the Middle Ages with Trinidad’s Modern Carnival…

With a loyal crowd at hand the stage lights slowly came on to warm the small stage showing a simple castle-like set design and two 300 lb stagehands dressed in white Trini Reveller shirts one positioned at stage left and the other at stage right.  Why they were not wearing black so that they would not become the focus of attention bewilders me??!!  And better yet why they were not positioned behind the entrance and exit of the stage is still a mystery!

First on stage in an uncoordinated sword salute were the Knights in Shinning Armour followed King Henry the 8th and the Lords of England.  I must say that these costumes by Michael Chin looked quite authentic, well thought out and gained great applause from the crowd.  And I assume that choice of materials would make these costumes very practical for Carnival Caribbean Weather.

The rest of the presentation had little or nothing to do with history. There was Robin Hood and his Merry Men whose depiction was more pleasing because of his Merry WOMEN armed with bow and arrow ready to break any man’s heart.  There were Dragon Slayers whose costume lack imagination but were crowd pleasing because of their stage antics.  And there were Wizards and Sorcerers whose purple and gold robes with infused pyrotechnics made them one of the more interesting sections.

In the end it was great that Trini Revellers to invite TJJ to their Merrie Olde England event.  Revellers really know their market as most of the Sections portrayed were not skimpy and had good coverage and options for plus sized women were all in the mix.  But with a small stage with no projecting runway, and stage hands who were more interested in becoming the stars of the show, the viewing audience were left distracted and did not have a very intimate experience with the show…

Keiron was there… where were you?
