The buildup to Sugarcane’s XXXtreme Masquerade was extreme: wigs and make-up and hats and corsets make for a flurry of activity and slight madness with excitement built in.

All came to a halt with our first issue: parking. The Loft Studio is located in Clinton Hill, Brooklyn. By the time we found a spot, we were far enough away to have to take a taxi back to the venue. Next time we attend an event in this area, we will be sure to leave the car at home and take a taxi from the start!

The scene outside was a madhouse. There were 2 parties being held at the venue and the entrances were right next to each other. Lines were stretching out in all directions. The NYPD was stationed at either end of the block, not allowing people to drive down the 2 way street in front of the venue. I saw more than one person walk away, not willing to wait out the crazy scene. But somehow we got into the venue-so glad that we did.

The loft was packed and everyone was in the Halloween spirit. I saw Indians and flappers, fellow cowgirls and cowboys, lots of men in medical coats and of course, what seemed like a million women in push-up bras and corsets. Everyone was wearing a costume and those who wore make-up went all out and dramatic.

There were 3 professional dancers spaced through-out the venue, one in a cage and 2 dancing on stripper poles-impressive. There were 2 bars, one closer to the entrance and the other all the way in the back next to the food which you know I well took advantage. You can’t go to a Sugarcane event and not sample the food! I chomped on a piece of jerk chicken while scoping out the scene…and I was in my glee when I found the Halloween table laden with all my favorite candies, chocolate and several types of cupcakes. Can I say yum again?

As I entered the fete, DJ Spice was on the wheels. Then Notorious got on the mic and tried to hype up the scene. Young Starr and DJ Anonymous also took a turn on the wheels as well. So how was dancing so minimal? The vibe of the party was definitely more social than bacchanal-which I will never understand, because all the elements for a good fete were present.

Regardless I had a good time because the next thing you know, the lights were coming up and the fete was over!!! TJJ would like to say a big thank you to Sugarcane for having us…looking forward to next year. Wonder what I will dress up as for Halloween 2011? Hmm…..
