Carnival KidZone coming

Traditionally the children’s shows at Carnival see the youngsters being entertained by popular soca artistes whose songs are not always child appropriate and need to be censored or edited. The children themselves, however, don’t have many platforms available from which they can express their own talents and entertain their peers and parents.

Randy Glasgow Productions is for Carnival 2011 providing just such a platform through its new event titled Uncle Errol’s Carnival KidZone where the children are the stars on stage. Hosted by Errol Fabien, the show is scheduled to take place on February 5 from 4pm on the Main Court of the Jean Pierre Complex, Wrightson Road, Port of Spain.

Carnival KidZone is a children’s show with a difference, or should we say, one with a number of innovations. RGP is seeking to allow talented children the opportunity to begin their rise to stardom at as early an age as possible through this event in which the little ones will express themselves through singing, dance, music and what other performances they have to offer.

Another unique element of Carnival KidZone will be the presentation of David Aseba Wilson, a Trinidadian musician based in California who has achieved international acclaim for the music he creates specifically for children. Wilson’s catchy melodies and inventive rhythms put to nursery rhymes, folk songs and original compositions are loved by children and their parents alike.

Children as young as two-years-old and even younger than that would join Wilson during performances on stages across the United States and Europe to sing along with him. Defined as a musical storyteller, Wilson uses calypso, rapso and Trinidad folk music to tell stories, some of them Caribbean folk tales such as those of the adventures of the spider known as Anansi

He also performs popular lullabies such as “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star” and songs like “You Are My Sunshine” in calypso and folk styles. Wilson performs at schools, libraries, museums, hospitals and festivals around the world. He has to date released four CD collections namely, Go Itsy, No More Monkeys, Children Are The Sunshine and In The Kid Zone.

Already Fabien and RGP have begun to invite young performers such as reigning National Junior Calypso Monarch, Aaron Duncan, former monarchs, Ferdinand Smith and Timmel Rivas, the cast of J.J. and Friends, Avinash Maharaj and members of the Marcia Charles Dance School to perform at Carnival KidZone. Parents and teachers are invited to send in videos of children they believe have what it takes to perform before large audiences for consideration to be included on the lineup.

Already Fabien who is very excited over the show is setting things in motion for a summer version of KidZone during the next August vacation period. RGP is confident that this new series will serve the nation’s talented children well as did the Coca Cola Carnival Youth Festival it created over a decade ago. This event served as the springboard from which the likes of Destra, Bunji Garlin, Maximus Dan, 3-Suns and Fay Ann Lyons launched their respective careers.
