The Marionettes Chorale Extends Its Submission Deadline For Lead Solo Vocalists And Orchestral Instrumentalists
Trinidad and Tobago’s Premier Choir Is Casting For Its 2011 Grand Production Of The Opera, Carmen
February 28, 2011 – Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago - Trinidad and Tobago’s vocalists and instrumentalists prepare to shine. The internationally renowned, Marionettes Chorale, is casting for its 2011 grand production of George Bizet’s opera, Carmen. In response to requests from applicants, the leading chorale has extended the application deadline for principal solo singing roles as well as orchestral musicians by two weeks to Sunday March 13, 2011, to allow for the demands of the hectic Carnival season.
This July, the Marionettes will add its Caribbean flavour to the epic French opera, Carmen. Carmen, which is set in 1820 Seville, Spain, tells the tragic tale of a feisty Gypsy girl who captures the heart of corporal Don José. In signature Marionettes style, Trinidad and Tobago’s indigenous instrument, the steelpan, will feature alongside traditional orchestral instruments bringing some of the nation’s leading musicians to one stage. Premier contemporary modern dance company, the Noble Douglas Dance Company Inc. (NDDCI), will execute choreography for the production. Commenting on the submission extension, artistic and musical director, Gretta Taylor shared, “We’ve received a great response, but know that the extra two weeks will give those interested the opportunity to submit stronger applications while allowing all applicants to better prepare themselves for the auditions.”
For the past 47 years, the Marionettes Chorale has established itself as one of the Caribbean’s premier choirs performing to audiences in North America, Europe and throughout the region. The longest standing choir in Trinidad and Tobago, the Marionettes was founded in 1964 while its Youth Chorale was formed in 1995. The chorale boasts a repertoire that ranges from European renaissance to Caribbean folk and calypso. The Marionettes, with bpTT’s steady support since 1972, produces two major annual presentations under the conductorship of Taylor and her assistant musical director, Susan Dore and the administrative support of secretary and founding member, Joanne Mendes. In 1987, the decorated choir added Trinidad and Tobago’s national award, the Hummingbird Medal Gold, to its long list of accolades. Internationally, renowned composers including the late Dr. Havelock Nelson, Stewart Hylton Edwards and Alma Pierre have honoured the Marionettes’ exemplary work by dedicating compositions to the choir.
Interested singers and instrumentalists are invited to submit a note of interest along with a résumé or biography detailing experience and audio or video excerpts of performances. Additionally, singers are requested to submit an 8” x 10” headshot (or clear photograph) and to prepare a piece from the role they would like to audition for. All submissions should be sent no later than Sunday March 13, 2011, to email@marionetteschorale.com. Only suitable candidates for lead solo singing roles and for orchestral musicians will be interviewed and/or auditioned. Interviews and auditions run until the end of March.
