It’s here again! DC Carnival! And the annual kickoff Islands in the Sun promises to set the tone for the events for the week. As usual, it did not disappoint! Great food, great music, great people!

We arrived at the event in time for DJ Ghost who was setting up the vibez for de night. Nice rock with the music as we got the lay of the land. A quick peep to the right and we spotted Mario and Isham, clearly if those two are in chef gear there’s great food around. So we took a quick run for the first belly full. Yah man, that did really hit de spot. Money’s worth there alone!

Belly full, we took a run on down to de drinks. Got to spot out you bartender so you can be assured quick service for the night. Of course we got distracted by the ice shot area, where very helpful ladies made sure they did their part to get you tipsy faster.

Ahh! De bar. Very large layout and a helpful staff made sure you got your drink before you missed having a drink. Scotch in hand, the early socialization began. Sounds of “where you been” echoed through the dance as friends who had gone into deep hibernation for the winter were spotted.

As the reunions were underway, DJ Sprang started to move the crowd from warm to HOT! Prompting party patrons to move from the back by the bar up to the stage for the jump up! Bway, it was funny at first, watching de old creaky winter bones remember how fi dance, but remember they did and the revelry started with full force. The only draw-back for the layout was the bar was too far away from the stage so you had to break from the dancing to get to the drinking.

As the sun set, the party got into full swing, and all of a sudden, yes, de Yacouba Mask Society was dere, in complete costume, dancing over the crowd on stilts. Carnival officially is here!

Party was in full swing with the occasional stage rush fe free t-shirt. Yes, you know island people love anything fe free! As the party time was coming to an end, the rain drops that had been threatening to fall started a small guest appearance. Me nuh sure how dem promoters did do it, but they managed to keep the rain that was forecast for the entire day until the very end.

Overall it was an excellent start for the carnival week. Great to rekindle friendships, get the outdoor party vibe, and, of course … SOCA!
