Events abound in Tobago during any given month but this June the Division of Tourism and Transportation of the Tobago House of Assembly will score a hat-trick with a series of activities that span both Trinidad and Tobago.

Tobago Dragon Boat Festival

The Tobago Dragon Boat Festival kicks things off on June 17 at the Pigeon Point Heritage Park, Tobago. Teams have been undergoing technique and conditioning training for weeks now and the competition promises to be a nail-biting affair as 14 teams from Trinidad and 12 teams from Tobago vie for the right to call themselves this year’s Dragon Boating champions. The excitement starts at 10 a.m. on Father’s Day with action on the water as well as on the sand. Chinese martial artists, dragon dancers and the Chinese steel orchestra will be among the live performances.

Tobago Day at the Races

Next on the agenda is the Tobago Day at the Races on June 19 at the Santa Rosa Park, Trinidad from 11:30 a.m. Horse racing enthusiasts will gather on Labour Day holiday a few hours of Tobago flavoured sport, entertainment and cuisine. The horse races, all named after iconic places in Tobago, will be run in honour of Tobagonians who have contributed to the national horse racing industry. Additionally, in a pleasant twist, two feature goat races will be added to the lineup as a nod to the unique and very competitive goat racing fraternity in Tobago. Cultural presentations such as the Moriah Ole Time wedding will engage participants off the track while Tobagonian caterers and some of the island’s top restaurant chefs will display their culinary talents for those interested in indulging in authentic Tobagonian dishes.

Tobago Culinary Festival

Speaking of food, it will be ‘Food Fuh So’ at the Tobago Culinary Festival on June 24 at the Pigeon Point Heritage Park, Tobago. Gates open at 10 a.m. and the local and international food being prepared by vendors will be available for purchase from 11 a.m. The culinary action takes place in the kitchen stadium with the Iron chef and secondary school competitions; while the wine zone – a Festival first – will provide wine connoisseurs with tastings and an extensive selection of both local and international wines for browsing as well as buying. Live entertainment will be provided by Super Blue, Stalin, Baron, Explainer and many more.

The Tobago House of Assembly, through the Division of Tourism and Transportation, continues to stimulate the tourism business unit through events strategically coordinated to highlight the island’s unique tourism product and establish it as an ideal destination for domestic and international visitors.
