The Division of Tourism and Transportation will recognize the significance of Tobago’s tourism industry during its annual observance of Tobago Tourism Month from November 1-30, 2012.

Under the Caribbean Tourism Organisation (CTO) theme of ‘One Sea, One Voice, One Caribbean’, this year’s Tourism Month will allow the Division to highlight the work that has been done to elevate the industry over the past year, as well as present various opportunities to raise public awareness of tourism’s importance to Tobagonians.

Several aspects of this year’s celebration will focus primarily on nurturing an understanding of this critical sector and fostering an appreciation for an industry that has been the backbone of Tobago’s economy since the late 1950s.

Specifically targeting the island’s creative fraternity, the Division will host the theme song, photography and videography competitions that will encourage Tobagonians to seek inspiration from the natural beauty of the island and the vibrant spirit of its people. The theme song competition requires entrants to submit a song that articulates a positive message about any aspect of Tobago’s tourism industry. The photography and videography competitions will challenge individuals to capture the essence of Tobago’s tourism product in several categories, including Scenery, People, Culture and ‘Islandness’. Winning entries will be featured in various productions and publications commissioned by the Division in its quest to promote Tobago as an ideal destination for international travelers.

For those equally passionate about Tobago’s tourism product, but seeking more of a thrill, the ‘Know Your Island’ Treasure Hunt will be held on November 13. Teams of at least three persons can participate in what promises to be an adrenaline-pumping experience that will take contestants on a tour of Tobago as they follow various clues to some of the destination’s best know sites and even a few of its best kept secrets.

Another interactive event that won’t work up as much of a sweat will take place at the Fort King George Heritage Park. Winner of the 2011 Heritage Preservation Award for Best Historic Restoration Project, the park will come alive with a more engaging experience for visitors during Tourism Month. Every Sunday for the month of November, persons will be able to step back in time and learn about the fort through the animated narratives of trained tour guides and dramatizations performed by costumed actors.

Other interesting events to look forward to will be the launch of Tobago Tourism Month on November 1 at the A. N. R. Robinson International Airport; an encore of the Underwater Carnival’s highly successful ‘Try-Dive’ event on November 13 at the YMCA; and the ‘Tobago...Truly Romantic Wedding and Honeymoon Symposium’ from November 27-29 at the Magdalena Grand Beach Resort.

Further details on all Tobago Tourism Month activities will be released via print and broadcast media.
