For the first time in this country’s history, there is an online resource of Trinidad and Tobago’s sporting legends. The National Sporting Archive (www.sportarchivestt.com) is the initiative of the Honourable Anil Roberts, Minister of Sport. According to Minister Roberts, the project is an important one for the sport industry and will continue to be a work in progress to document the achievements of national athletes at all levels.
“The National Sporting Archive is a dynamic work that we hope will be a tribute to those who wore the red, white and black with pride as well as a learning tool for up and coming athletes to understand the rich legacy of sporting achievement they must strive to uphold and even surpass. The information gathered and stored on this website will be a record for all time and a resource for anyone wanting to learn about Trinidad and Tobago’s contribution to the global sporting landscape. I encourage everyone to visit and browse the site. It doesn’t belong to the Ministry or the Sports Company, it belongs to the people of Trinidad and Tobago who should contribute their knowledge and insight to the archive in order to keep it accurate and relevant.”
The website was launched in 2012, coinciding with Trinidad and Tobago’s 50th anniversary of Independence and features the records and accomplishments of the country’s Olympians, Test Cricketers and other international performers in World Cup football, netball, boxing and track and field. Further research will focus on administrators and other contributors to the sporting landscape.
The project is fully funded by the Sports Company of Trinidad and Tobago and contains comprehensive statistics and information, as well as rarely-seen, archival images and video to illustrate the powerful sporting legacy that is hoped will be treasured for generations to come.
