John S. and James L. Knight Foundation Joins As a Supporter of Ayiti Images

Miami, FL. January 30, 2015 – In its 3rd edition, Ayiti Images is back with an interesting twist in Haitian history told through animation in the documentary film “Storming Papa Doc” by Mario L. Delatour screening throughout South Florida February 2nd-7th 2015. Knight Foundation joins the series as a sponsor to help create awareness and conversation about the Haitian culture through film. The concept of this new traveling series is it brings quality Haitian film programs right to people’s neighborhood. In collaborations with FIU’s Latin American and Caribbean Center, Little Haiti Cultural Center, O Cinema, Lake Worth Playhouse, the Cinema and Interactive Media and the Haitian Student Association at the University of Miami, the films gives Haiti a unique voice told by the people who live, speak and feel the culture.

“We are excited to have the support of Knight Foundation and are grateful they have joined our efforts in engaging the South Florida community about Haiti and the Haitian experience through film,” states director Rachelle Salnave.

“The Miami indie film scene is booming, as local filmmakers are starting to tell stories that resonate both locally and nationally. We’re excited by the voice that Ayiti Images brings to this conversation,” said Dennis School, vice president of arts for Knight Foundation.

“Victorieux ou morts mais jamais prisonniers” – “Victory or Death but never Prisoners” sets the stage and the motto of the new documentary directed by Mario L Delatour. Storming Papa Doc, the English title of this historical reenactment set on July 28th, 1958, tells the story of former Haitian army officers from Haiti who are exiled out of the country to Florida, USA only to return with a vengeance and a plan to overthrow Haitian President, Dr. Francois Duvalier. Created in animation and intercut with interviews of friends and family members of the brigade, the film explores the interesting lives of each member. Portraying a time capsule of Haiti in the 1940’s and Florida as a temporary incubator for the opposition, this artistic film seeks to chronicle what could have been one of the most successful military operations in Haitian history, the removal of one of most notorious dictator’s of the 20th century.

There will be a Q&A with the director after each screening with a special moderated conversation by Eduard Duval-Carré at O Cinema, Latin American and Caribbean Center Director and Professor Frank Mora at FIU, and Historian Anthony Georges-Pierre with Poet Mecca
