George Town Primary School (GTPS)
returns to the Junior Batabano parade this year after a few years’ hiatus, thanks to the generous sponsorship of Sagicor Life of the Cayman Islands.

The school’s costumes have been designed by local costume designer, Reba Dilbert, who has been making the costumes on-site at the school along with the assistance of teachers, parents, and students who have been gaining hands-on knowledge about costume-making from Ms. Dilbert. George Town Primary’s costume theme is “Rainbows and Sun”, in-keeping with the carnival’s overall theme “Splendor of the Skies”.

Sagicor employees have also been assisting with making the costumes for George Town Primary’s Junior Batabano entry this year by volunteering their time on the weekends.

Sagicor Country Manager, Tatiana Brown, said: “Sagicor is proud to sponsor George Town Primary School in the upcoming Junior Batabano. Sagicor promotes community involvement not only on a corporate level but also on an individual level to all our team members. Our main focus is children and investing in them as they are our future. Our team is looking forward to being on the road with them and letting them have a great day with their friends and family.”

Donna Myrie-Stephen, Chairperson of the Cayman Carnival Batabano Committee (CCB) which organizes Junior Batabano, commented: “We are so excited to have George Town Primary back in Junior Batabano thanks to the sponsorship of Sagicor, and for the donated time and talent of our very own Caymanian costume designer, Reba Dilbert. It’s wonderful to see our local community come together like this for the ongoing preservation of culture and the arts.”

Junior Batabano, which will see record-breaking participation this year with some 450 students in the parade, takes place on Saturday April 28, 2017 starting at 2pm from the old Glass House on Elgin Avenue, followed by a dynamic dance competition and costume display on the Glass House lawns where each school will be competing for the coveted Junior Batabano Band of the Year. There will also be Family Fun Day activities on site for the entire family to enjoy until 4pm, including bouncy castles, cotton candy and snow cones, face painting, and much more.

On the same evening, the annual “Teen Glow Party” (for ages 13–17) takes place from 7pm to 10:30pm at the George Town Town Hall.

On the day before the parade, Friday April 27th, the second Annual Junior Batabano “Pan on Parade” presented by Flow, takes place at Camana Bay starting at 5:30pm.
