Millhouse Clothing, the country’s premier menswear label, launched its 2009 Holiday Collection, Southern Comfort, at the star studded Caribbean Fashion Week on June 13th.  The event which featured the work of fashion designers spanning four continents also included performances by Grammy award winning artist Kelly Rowlands, the super sexy Eve, alongside Jamaican dancehall stars Cherrine Anderson and Dancehall fashionista Michelle ‘D’Angel’ Downer-Davis.

Following rave reviews at Trinidad’s very own FWTT last May the collection was again well received at CFW, this time catching the eye of NY based stylist Nia Roberts who immediately solicited the services of Millhouse to style the ultra smooth soul music sensation Anthony Hamilton. The offer, not unfamiliar to Millhouse who in the past have outfitted known music superstars,  Erykah Badu, Jill Scott and Mos Def in collaboration with Trinidad born New York based designer Ms Charlene Sheppard Duncan.

Southern Comfort, borrowing inspiration from the maverick era of brave men, the line is reflective of the choice of the small businessmen to forge ahead ad remain resilient in this turbulent economic climate. “It’s a tough time for business but style is never dead”, chides Gregory Mills, who always felt he was a renegade in the fashion world.“ Caribbean designers are inherently brave. We have a history, long and treasures of charting into well bordered territories and insist we have something to say in our own unique way”, says Mills.

“We focused on the sleeves in this collection”, said Coline Baptiste-Mills, who conceptualised and executed the line. Armbands and vests are the predominant element of the collection. Black is the predominant hue.  The finest wools were used in this collection dupioni silks, Sea Island cotton; no costs were spared. All fabric was sourced locally.

The nation’s first couple of style Gregory Mills and wife Coline Baptiste-Mills are the designers behind Millhouse. They have established a reputation of bringing the clean lines and bespoke sophistication of slim fit to Caribbean design.
The design duo opted to unveil their Holiday Collection instead of the Spring/Summer 2010 collection at this time.  Their Summer 2010 Collection this year is called Tie Marie, inspired by our rebellious indigenous flora. The collection will be unveiled at the Islands of the World Fashion Week, scheduled for October this year in Bahamas; just in time for the Tourist Season November to April.

Millhouse Clothing founded in 1997 by menswear designers Gregory Mills and wife Coline Baptiste-Mills is Trinidad and Tobago’s foremost men’s fashion design company, with both local and regional recognition.   At present their fashion line is retailed in Trinidad and Tobago only. However, their clients include residents of North America and several European countries.
