Big People Fete - I wish I could speak of the other performances that took place that evening but everything I heard was from the outside and all I kept thinking was wow, that sounds great...too bad I'm out here pressed up against this 6' man's back with no escape. I chipped straight to stage left and saw Kes the band and Nadia Batson perform. I love how they know how to move a crowd. My mood was temporarily turned into happiness and made up for my terrible entrance into the fete. After they exited the stage, there was a brief period of DJed music or as they say "head to the bar music". I tried yet again to get a drink and gave up after about 15 minutes of trying to get to the front of the line.
The Mighty Swallow took to the stage at around 2am, just as I chipped on out leaving disgruntled and unfulfilled. And no corn soup man outside to boot. Sadly this fete gets a thumbs down from me. I really expected it to be something great especially with all the hype surrounding it but unfortunately all that I kept thinking was that I could have been inside sleeping. |

S O C A O R D I E 2009 - There are several key triggers and guides that one would use to ascertain whether the vibe in a fete is awesome. Some people look at the way the women in the crowd are dancing, whether it's a "social wine" or a "Me an mih man jus break up" type of wine. Others look at the overall response to the music, crowd participation and obedience to the instructions given by the artist on stage. I must confess that I too subscribed to this format until I entered the Mirage at 11:00pm. Keep in mind that the fete, was scheduled to commence at 10pm WST, (West Indian Standard Time=45min later) As I entered the dance floor I saw a man, whom we shall call "RAJ" had turned himself into a human bowling ball and was rolling through the crowd who seemed oblivious to his presence. This is indeed testament to the power of Soca music....and/or strong rum
