THURSDAY, 10 JULY, 2008 – Bridgetown, Barbados: Digicel, proud sponsor of West Indies cricket, launched the fifth Digicel Sir Garfield Sobers International Cricket Tournament last Sunday with 20 teams from the Caribbean and the UK competing over a three-week period in Barbados for the Digicel Sir Garfield Sobers Cup.

The Digicel Sir Garfield Sobers Cricket Tournament which is taking place in 17 venues around the island, is an excellent opportunity for young cricketers from Trinidad, Barbados, Antigua, Guyana, Jamaica and five teams from the UK, to gain valuable match experience and improve their cricket skills. The tournament has grown rapidly over recent years and is seen as a pivotal step for young cricketers with past participants including Brian Lara, Courtney Browne, Dwayne Bravo, Denesh Ramdin, Sherwin Campbell and Kemar Roach, who have all gone on to have successful International cricket careers.

Digicel’s Head of Marketing, Robert Chase, said of the tournament, “Digicel is delighted to be involved in the Digicel Sir Garfield Sobers International Cricket Tournament which allows young, talented cricketers from Barbados and across the Caribbean and the UK to represent their schools in a competitive, friendly atmosphere, against their regional and international peers. The Digicel Sir Garfield Sobers Cricket Tournament is also supported by the Barbados Tourism Authority who drive awareness of the tournament across the region and the UK to attract more participating teams each year.
