T&T to boost energy exports to Panama

Trinidad and Tobago will be strengthening economic and technical ties with Panama, with plans for this country to supply propane, butane, diesel, gasoline and bitumen, as well as industry knowledge to Panama as that country's demand for energy grows.

"Panama...is looking to Trinidad and Tobago for expertise and supplies of energy. As such we will make our service companies in both the private and public sectors available," said Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar yesterday.

She was speaking at a media briefing at the Diplomatic Centre in St Ann's after she and Energy Minister Kevin Ramnarine met with a Panamanian delegation headed by Panama's Energy Minister Juan Manuel Urriola Tam.

Other items on the agenda included the supply of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) to Panama, and the acquisition of a bunkering licence for Petrotrin in the Panama Canal free zone, which will give access to bunkering ships and the local Panamanian market.

Tax concessions for the National Petroleum Marketing Company (NP) for the establishment of a blending plant in Panama, which will give Trinidad and Tobago the advantage of getting into the lubricant and additives market, were also discussed.

Trinidad curfew lifted, but state of emergency remains

(Trinidad Guardian) – The Prime Minister of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, Kamla Persad-Bissessar, has lifted the curfew on land and sea with immediate effect, but the state of emergency remains in effect.

After her meeting with the National Security Council, the PM declared that the state of emergency a success citing statistics which spoke to major reductions in criminal activity over the period, increased confidence in the protective services and greater participation by the community in the fight against crime.

According to the PM, the state of emergency has “saved our nation” and brought about a greater sense of safety. Declaring the battle “has been won”, the PM said that the state of emergency substantially reduced criminal activity, disturbed the drug cycle, strengthened intelligence gathering capabilities of the protective services and improved joint army/police forces.

The PM however reiterated that the state of emergency remained and that government reserved the right to impose a limited curfew if so advised by the National Security Council. She indicated that the government would be improving its monitoring and surveillance capability and capacity as well as it would be embarking on several social projects including an employment generating initiative to generate over 20,000 jobs in low-income communities.

The PM urged the citizens to be respectful of the law and thanked the many arms of the protective services; the Police, Defence Force and the Customs and Excise departments for their commitment to protecting the citizens of Trinidad and Tobago. She praised the members of the medical profession, judiciary, emergency services as well as the business community for their patience and creativity during the period.

Persad-Bissessar did not say where the State of Emergency's regulations would apply or when they would cease, saying she would give more details today. However sources indicated that it should apply in several areas across the country.

She said there was a need to implement strict conditions because of the crime spree over the weekend where 11 persons were killed in just over 48 hours. The Prime Minister said: "The current crime spree dictates that more must be done and stronger action has to be employed now.
