The World-famous Club Zen apparently can't stop delivering the biggest stars in the music industry to the T&T public... mere months after the well documented visit of Akon, less than 2 weeks after featuring the newest dancehall sensation Munga and 24 hours after Bermuda's own Reggae Star Collie Buddz blessed the stage, it was time for the breakout artist of 2007, Sean Kingston to performed in Zen's Hallowed Halls.

Given his appeal to the under-18 crowd and probably not wanting a repeat of... okay let's not get back into that... there was a smoke and alcohol free Matinee show earlier in the day that from all reports was packed with toddlers and teeny boppers screaming at the top of their lungs for the biggest artist off of Myspace.com.

We made it to the "grown folks" show at around 11:30pm to an unexpected sight.... no line wrapped around the corners outside!! In fact the line was just a few meters long... hmmmm. We stepped inside minutes later and realised that people had apparently listened to the marketing plug ... (make way for the newest Reggae/ Hip-Hop Star lol) ... as Level 1 was scattered with patrons who also seemed uneasy with the size of the crowd. Alas, they were there to party and party they did up until it was time for the performance, with the crowd seemingly doubling between midnight and 1am to an appreciable number. A few minutes after 1am our attention was directed stage side for the 17 year old star, and after a false start caused by a technical difficulty the Jamaican raised Miami native made an energetic entrance fully clad in "Bling Bling" sending the crowd in frenzy.

He started off with his second single "Me Love" and then showed his 'harder' side with "Colours". He was backed up by several members of his "Belluga Heights" record label posse who seemed to be enjoying the experience of being in Trinidad. Next up was "Your Sister", "Take You There", "Got No Shorty" and a few others off of his Self-titled Debut Album.

With the some of the crowd lost with the lesser known tracks from the album he brought the crowd to a stir with his breakout hit "Beautiful Girls", with all the couples in the crowd managing to get a bit closer to each other. A burst of confetti added a touch of magic to the performance and Sean made his way off stage. Sadly the call for an encore went unanswered by the crowd and it was back to party time as One Republic's"Too Late To Apologize" ballad rang out from the Zen speakers.

We hung out downstairs for a while and took in the Saturday night vybz with a random drummer making his way through the club whilst some alternative and techno was playing creating quite a whirl amongst the Level 1ers. Looking for a little wine and change of scenery we took our cameras upstairs to the Champagne Room after chilling with some friends. To our pleasant surprise Sean and the crew were up in the V.I.P. partying like Rap Stars standing up on the couches whilst surrounded by a heavy security detail. Ahhhh... now was the perfect time to get a close up look at this "Bling Bling"!! We pulled out our Press Pass and weaved our way through the crowd til we were not more than a foot from the Teen Choice Award winner.

No begging for pictures here.... as he and the posse coolly posed for several pictures. We motioned that we wanted pictures of his jewelry and he gladly obliged.... the earrings, watch and pinky ring were crazy but the chain and medallion were absolutely stunning... a multi-coloured, diamond encrusted chain with a solid gold "Box of Crayons" filled with every colour of the rainbow reminiscent of my days in kindergarten.

They seemed to only know how to dance to the Hip Hop of their homeland, but after some chit chat and some lessons from some beautiful Trini girls, they became all too familiar with our local culture. They partied in a friendly and alcohol free (at least from what I saw) environment until after 3am when they were whisked off by bodyguards to a private exit. We made a trek back downstairs to pick up the marathon partiers and relaxed for a while before heading out the door.

It was a night of mixed feelings, but still a relatively eventful one and one which will be remembered by all in attendance. We thank the Zen family for facilitating us on both nights and look forward to them extending their list of high profile performers with Boyz II Men and One Republic scheduled for the coming months.
