LyrikalOpen Up Lyrikal Is Coming In...
by Niama Sandy
Posted 12-26-05

With new projects like "De Hunter," "Quickie," and "Straight to Germany" Lyrikal is ready to make a wave this coming Carnival season!

"De Hunter," produced by Shawn "Da Ma$tamind" Noel, is a bit of a departure from the usual sound for Lyrikal.

"This song has more of a J'ouvert kind of-chipping vibe. Sometimes you have to hit them with a left," said Lyrikal.

The song which is creating a lot of buzz on the Soca scene will be featured on Ma$tamind Productions' upcoming release Da Ma$tamind Project.

In the lyrics to "De Hunter," the wordsmith shows his musical influences.

"Ten to one is murder but dat eh no ting." That's a spin of a lyric from Mighty Sparrow. Lord Kitchener, he was one of the biggest thing in Trinidad in Soca. Crazy, those artistes made an impact on me. I used to listen to a lot of reggae also. Artistes like Buju Banton, Shabba Ranks, Rootsman, Mad Cobra, all of those artistes who were really getting out in the 80's. Reggae on the whole reggae was big in the 80 in Trinidad and in the whole Caribbean for the youth. That's why you hear a lot of artistes-including myself- sing the way they sing. It was so big in those times that everyone has a little bit of it in their style."

On another release "Straight to Germany," on the Body Shots Riddim, Lyrikal congratulates Trinidad & Tobago's Soca Warriors on their World Cup qualification.

"They created history being one of the fourth Caribbean teams to make it to the World Cup. The song breaks down the elements of what happens in a football game," said Lyrikal.

Also slated for release are songs on the Quickie and Last Resort riddims, on the latter riddim Lyrikal has two songs.

"Actually, I was the first to record on the Quickie riddim. I did the title track 'Quickie.' 'I ain't tryna get stick. It's just something quick. On the Last Resort Riddim I have two songs. One with Precious & I called 'Give It to Me' and 'Hundred Percent Man' by myself. It's about guys who like to be in girls' business, who like to carry back news when two women may be in bacchanal," explained the silver-tongued lyricist.

Impack2Impack2's Setting Up For More
by Niama Sandy
Posted 12-26-05

After recently celebrating a one-year anniversary, the band members of Impack2 are optimistic about future developments.

"The whole idea is for us to do our own music. I want us to be known for our music, so hopefully this song can open doors to traveling and performing in different countries taking us to a different level than what we are doing now," explained Daria Primus, the group's vocal powerhouse.

The song in question is a tune set to be a hit among Soca listeners.

"More Love," performed by Impack2, written by fellow Soca artiste Lyrikal and produced by Shawn Ma$tamind Noel, "More Love" is a change of pace for the group.

"They called and said they needed lyrics. She had the melody, she asked me to help her. What Daria usually sings about is party vibes and what I sing about is usually girls, so we hit them with a slight left. I took it home and I said we are going to do something positive because with that you can never lose. Even if it isn't the biggest song of the year, someone will always relate to it and grasp it," explained Lyrikal.

On the up-tempo track, Daria Primus's piercing soprano shares a vision for a less violent world.

"I think it's a great song and I love it. It talks about more love, what's going on in the Caribbean it's a lot of fighting and confusion. It's all about more love, spreading peace," said Garvin Williams, Impack2's bass player and Band leader.

While lead singer's vocals soar high, the rest of the band moves seamlessly along with her voice on the track produced by Shawn "Da Ma$tamind" Noel. Slated to be among the host of tracks on the upcoming "Ma$tamind Project," the song marks Impack2's first time working with Noel.

"It was cool working with him. I don't want to only do Soca- I love Soca but I want to be versatile, and I see him as being the perfect producer for that. I think he's very talented," exclaimed Primus.

Denise Belfon's take on working with Macka Diamond was, "People asking me why you doing stuff with Jamaican artists and outside people, why you don't do stuff with your own local artists and stuff? Sherwin "Postman" RogersPostman Delivers
by Niama Sandy
Posted 11-22-05

Boasting musical interests ranging from Country Music to Classic Calypso and Reggae, Sherwin "Postman" Rogers has a special delivery for Soca listeners coming in Spring 2006.

The independently financed album tentatively titled 'The Delivery' will feature tracks produced by Soca heavy-hitters like Parry Jack, Carole Hodge, Cherry Ince, Shawn "Da Ma$tamind" Noel and others.

According to Postman, the 16-track album will also showcase "more mature" subject matter.

This mature sound can be attributed to the fact that Postman is a family man.

"The sound is more mature because I have matured myself; I'm 35 and I have a family. I am married, I have two kids, and I am a homeowner. I am happy as a result of the lather bringing me back to music and being able to write my own music," explained Postman.

Over the course of the last 3 years Postman has recorded 23 songs, some of which are based upon life experience and some based on allusion.

Sixteen of those tracks will be featured on 'The Delivery.'

"Love Inside A We" which will also be featured the upcoming Ma$tamind Project, was produced by Shawn "Da Mastamind" Noel.

On the up-tempo tune featuring Trinidad & Tobago's reigning Soca Monarch Champion Bunji Garlin, "Love Inside A We" Postman stresses on the importance of loving your neighbor, your family, and even your enemies.

Postman explains, "The best way to teach a lesson is to first lead by example, and this song is to show that I am practicing what I am preaching."

"Love Cry," produced by Cherry Ince, is a song for lovers.

"Could Wine," produced by Parry Jack, who created 2003's "Couldn't Believe Riddim," is a feel-good tune that was released this past June.

It will also be on 'The Delivery'.

Already the video for "Could Wine" has been placed into rotation consistently on Synergy TV and is also on New York's Time Beats Plus program, both programs feature video selections from the Caribbean's leading artists.

Leon Coldero at University Fete'05Coldero Coming Hard for 2K6!
by Niama Sandy
Posted 11-14-05

Seasoned and versatile performer Leon Coldero is setting up for Carnival 2006 with several new projects. Currently headlining at the Bob Marley Café at Universal Studio City Walk in Orlando, FL alongside the band Mystik Nrg, the incomparable performer never skips a beat- literally and figuratively!

With arrangement and production by Shawn "Da Ma$tamind" Noel, and lyrics by Clyde "Kool" Headley, the up-tempo "Saddle Up" will be featured on the upcoming Ma$tamind Project compilation album.

"It's not a groove, it's a wild song. You have to saddle up! Picture yourself like a jockey on a horse. And who ever wants to be the jockey it could work both ways," Coldero explained merrily.

While the idea for the song was present, the production stalled for a moment.

"Sometimes in writing, you just draw blanks and nothing's feeling right. We had issues with the song. We had a rhythm going, we had an idea for a song and it just kept changing in the studio. We asked Kool to come by and he started singing this "Saddle Up," and that started feeling good. It just became better as we continued. We wrote the song right there in the studio. "

"Saddle Up" also marks the second time the Coldero has worked with Shawn Noel.

"Working with Shawn was a great experience! That's something that you find as an artiste working along with producers, it makes the job so much easier when you're in an environment where you feel comfortable," said Coldero.

The first venture is titled "Parangin' in Brooklyn."

"I always thought that there are many Trinidadians in Brooklyn and it would be nice to do a Parang track for them to make them feel at home."

The tune was Noel's first foray into the Parang arena and marked the first time back in the studio for Coldero since "Long Distance" recorded in 2004.

During his hiatus from recording, Leon has been very active with his band Code 868. Code 868, titled after the area code of Trinidad & Tobago, though based in Florida performs all over the United States, Canada, South America and parts of the Caribbean.

Currently, Coldero is finishing production on a 14-track album tentatively titled Overseas. Scheduled for an after-carnival release, the album, in addition to "Saddle Up," will feature original songs as well as covers. On Overseas will be "I'm Alright," and "Groundin' Off," which producer Jason Lee describes as songs that attempts to "bring back melody to music," with "new vibes and new lyrics."

The album will showcase Code 868 in collaboration with some of Soca and Reggae's brightest talents featuring Eddie Charles, Roger George, Uncle Sam, Beenie Man and others. Executive producing the album will be Coldero himself along Pradeep Sawh.

"I have a passion for all art forms and all cultures as far as our music is concerned. If I have an idea for a song or someone comes to me with an idea for a song and I think it's a good song and I can do justice to the song then it doesn't matter whether it's a Chutney, Parang, Soca or Calypso-that's me, that's Trinidad!"

With that kind of attitude it's no wonder Leon Coldero, a proud son of the land of Steelpan, has his eyes on the prize for the upcoming Carnival season!

Coldero is all for the growth an expansion of Caribbean culture explaining that it may have been slightly inhibited through problems with marketing and packaging, and the fact that for most Soca & Calypso music is viewed as being seasonal.

"Our art form is originally called Calypso, we have tried different things and a lot of artistes don't want to call the music Calypso. Calypso it is the mother genre and it is more recognized throughout the world than Soca is. If you hear Dancehall, the first thing people think about is reggae. Whether you hear Rapso, Soca, or Ringbang, it's Calypso, not to say that confuses people."

Other than looking forward to a very successful 2006 in regard to his own career, Mr. Coldero hopes to create a development initiative for Soca music and its artistes.

"I would like to see more of our music being played, so more artistes can get work and also so that more songs can get popular. I think our music is a great music. It's dance music and it's happy music and if we were to put things into perspective as far as management is concerned we could go a lot farther in a shorter period of time."

Burton Toney at Unite De Nations 4Clear De Road Now for Burton Toney!
by Niama Sandy
Posted 11-02-05

Soca's energy powerhouse Burton Toney is looking forward to what he hopes will be a great 2006 carnival season!

Fresh for the upcoming season, Toney has just finished production on two tunes, "Now" and "Enter De Road," both of which shall be featured on Ma$tamind Productions upcoming Da Ma$tamind Project.

"Now," as Toney describes the tune, is "Rags, flags," "strictly party" and very up-tempo. Although this song marks Toney's first foray into writing a tune with tempo it was not all that foreign to him.

"For me, to be honest, I normally do more groovy tracks but my performance on stage is very high energy. I said if I am doing all of these songs with this energy level maybe the songs I release for this carnival are going to have to be up-tempo."

As for the actual assembly of tune, Toney explained that it was very smooth transition.

"Although it was my first time writing a fast song, the vibe was pretty natural to do in the studio because that's what I do most of the time when I'm on stage. It has never been that easy before. I think it's been easy because it's not something I had to learn it's something that I penned for myself. Shawn gives you that room to free up. And I said that I am going to make it as live as possible, I'm going to think like I'm on stage performing this track. That's how I got through doing the recording."

On the up-tempo "Enter De Road," a tune penned by Jason Lee and produced by Shawn Noel, Toney sings in the hope of seeing "more unity and togetherness" in Trinidad & Tobago and in the world on the whole.

"We as a people have to take back our land because our land is not ours- it's being taken over by crime and murder. We need to set an example; we need to take control! Let's a make a change- we need to!"

Fayeann at Glow DC CarnivalFayeann Lyons is Good to Go for '06!
by Niama Sandy
Posted 10-31-05

Finally coming down from the high of a triumphant 2005 season, Soca royalty Fayeann Lyons is ready and rearing to go for the Carnival 2006 season!

Among the four songs that Ms. Lyons has already recorded for the coming season is "One Day," a new song produced by Shawn "Da Ma$tamind" Noel. Set to be featured on an upcoming Ma$tamind Productions compilation titled The Mastamind Project to be released this December, the tune confirms the 2003 Roadmarch winner's versatility.

On "One Day," Lyons takes an alternate approach to her usual chanting style- singing with a smoky alto tone that any R&B aficionado would adore.

"'One Day' is a song that requires singing. I couldn't format it any other how but to sing it. That is just how the vibe came. When Shawn started to build the riddim I just started singing immediately. He said 'Yeah. We're going with that!' Within an hour the song was written and done."

While the tune showcases a different side of Lyons, she does not want to leave her support base behind.

"I wouldn't say I want to broaden my market in terms of the audience, but that I want to begin broadening my market in terms of the type of songs I have to share. What I want is variation in my music. I want to have music where you sing, where you chant, where you rap, where you do different types of things with your voice. I believe that the Lord gives you a talent and you're supposed to explore it to the fullest; not just limit yourself to doing one thing."

Lyons' belief in exploring will be shown on her upcoming 2006 releases.

"I no longer have only the jump & wave type of songs I actually have songs that you can sit down and listen to and dance to and reminisce on."

Also slated for release in the coming season is "It Nah Go Work" on the Memories Riddim. Lyons describes the song as a song written for people who have faced obstacles in life.

"The name of the song is 'It Nah Go Work,' because at the end of the day if you really sit down and look at all the things they try to do to stop you and prevent you from progressing it didn't work because the Lord has blessed you and who God bless no man curse. No matter what, when your friends and family stand against you, you'll always have yourself and you always have the Lord."

Odian Cyrus aka Skunky approached her in 1999 to do the lead vocals on “Iron in de Charcoal”. She laughed! I recall Skunky saying, “You can do it, I will never back a dead horse!”. Seeking further advice from her cousin, Nigell Lewis who encouraged and guided her all the way they headed for Graham Wilson’s studio in Woodbrook, Trinidad when her journey began.

Wen’D entered the London Calypso Monarch competition in 2001 with her rendition of “Immigrants Dilemma”, penned by “Tobago Crusoe” and that night history was made as she became the first woman to win the London Calypso Monarch competition in 12 years! Her first album, “The First Chapter” which includes her winning song and a remix of “Iron in de Charcoal” featuring ace comedian “Sprangalang” was then recorded.

Wen’D also featured in Greta Mendez’ sold out play, “NDulgence”, with a powerful delivery of Singing Sandra’s “Voices from the Ghetto”. In 2004 with an astounding performance of “My Kind Ah Man” and “The Internet”, both penned by Ortniel Bacchus “Tobago Crusoe”, Wen’D became the monarch once more.

A soul searching mission had Wen’D pondering on her journey thus far and the way forward. Reflecting on her mission, she said ....."as I strive for perfection in every area of my life, to be flawless is my ultimate goal!"

And so, “Flawless” was born! The launch of her 2nd album “D Journey Continues…” will take place on Sunday 20th November 2005 at the Welbourne Centre in Tottenham, North London. Supporting acts on the night of her launch will include, Jamaica’s Soca Queen, “Totally Talibah”, G- String (Guyana) and most deservingly, Curtis “General” Grant who recorded a duet on the album called “Baby Father”. Other features on the album include, “Ah want U 2” written by, Nigell Lewis; “Trini Carnival” written by “Flawless & General Grant” which also has a “garage” mix; “My kind Ah Man”, “Pushing Pram” written by “Tobago Crusoe” to name a few. Arrangers on the album include, award winning, Junior “Ibo” Joseph (Trinidad), Shawn Marcellin (St Lucian based in London) and Curtis “General” Grant.

“Flawless” has dedicated her album to her Mom, Kathleen Lewis in recognition of her unconditional love, support and sempiternal prayers. Her achievements in the music industry stem from managing to lead vocals to publisher as she now manages her own publishing company, WG Publishing. The title on her 2nd album says it all……….”D Journey Continues!”

Bunji definitely not happy with I Wayne's Devil Dancing quote
Posted 07-05-05

It wasn't too long after I new upcoming reggae artist, I Wayne, made a negative remark about Soca music in a public forum (see article below), that Bunji Garlin released a track titled U Bad or Wah Bunji Garlin - U Bad or Wah to express his feelings on the matter. Trust us, you never want to put down another man's culture, especially when it's their way of life!

Reggae Artist, I Wayne's quote in Boomshots Column in March's Vibe Magazine

Each and every island scattered throughout the sapphire waters of the Caribbean pulsates to its own unique rhythm. The richness of the Cuba, Trinidadian, and Puerto Rican music is well-known, but for the past 30 years, the most influential of the islands has been Jamaica, with its thriving ghetto sound system culture, which as transformed the world’s popular music, disseminating the DNA of reggae, dub, dancehall, and hip hop.

After years of mainstream exposure for the music of Jamaica, the rest of the Caribbean is starting to get in on the action. St. Vincent’s Kevin Lyttle and Barbadian star Rupee have crashed the pop charts, exciting audiences with their slowed-down “raga-soca.” The intoxicating Caribbean cocktail, full of breezy tropical blends, has given a new identity to the sounds of the island globally. “That’s one of the missions behind soca music,” says Rupee. “We want to show the rest of the world that there are many other islands in the Caribbean besides Jamaica.”

Meanwhile, Jamaican dancehall rhythms like “Mad Guitar” and “Stepz” are taking the tempo up toward 120 beats per minute and beyond, and signs of rivalry have developed between reggae and soca.

The rumblings began soon after Lyttle and Spragga Benz walked away with VIBE’s first Boomshot Award. “How could they pick a soca artist?” said the insecure whispers. “Ele or Beenie shoulda won that trophy.” Never mind that the award goes to the best Caribbean song of the year, not necessarily the best artist. And there was no denying that “Turn Me On” was a phenomenal hit. Lyttle’s graciousness in the victory defused any tension among the artists. “I’m a big fan of Elephant Man and Beenie Man,” he said with an eat-to-ear grin. “To be here in their presence sharing the same stage on an international scale is nothing more than a dream come true.”

Unfortunately, the success of Rupee and Lyttle has become both a gift and a curse. With the reggae pendulum swinging back toward one-drop reggae, on the strength of rootsy anthems by Richie Stephens and I Wayne, a clear line has been drawn in the sands of the Caribbean. The reggae purists are no longer playing nice with the soca contingent. “That is devil dancing,” says the Rasta representative I Wayne. “It’s dancing with the demons. That’s why I try to wake up the people and show them some message within the music.” But Rupee argues that soca is more than the sounds of sin. “Our music is a happy music,” he counters. “It’s about dancing and forgetting your worries and problems.”

Even as “established” dancehall stars like Sean Paul and Beenie Man have elevated the craft to a higher plateau, soca haters cannot put aside their resentment and appreciate the progressive movement for Caribbean music as a whole. Luckily, many of the artists within the culture understand that unity is the key to turning the recent explosion into an all-out invasion. “We really want to show the strength of the dancehall, hip hop, and soca when they come together inna one great fusion,” says Spragga, chilling with Lyttle and Beenie Man minutes after the well-publicized award-show melee. “Cause right now, we show the world what a real takeover is,” Beenie Man smiles and concurs: “Dancehall style take over now.” And just for clarity’s sake Spragga adds: “Take over, no make over.”

Rupee 1 on 1 Tour TorontoAtlantic Recording Artist Rupee 1 on 1 Tour in Toronto
Posted 04-14-05 ~ Andre C. Choo Quan (Trini Jungle Juice)

It was exactly two weeks after Machel & Xtatik left the Koolhaus on fire, that international Bajan superstar, Rupee and his Dot Com band came to Toronto on Sat 9th April to keep the fire blazing! This was his first full length performance in Toronto, all backed by his band, as well as, the first installment of the "Soca or Die" series promoted by Dr. Jay and the Soca Therapy crew... so you know Rupee came to represent for the fans.

Now, it's a Caribbean event we talking about here, and people were still making their way into the venue well after the carded showtime of Midnight, so you know Rupee and his band made their way to the stage well after scheduled showtime. However, the early arrivals were not bothered in the least, as some socialized at the bar, while the rest enjoyed the DJ's selection of music... which I must add was very impressive compared to the DJ's at Fire Fete. The crowd had a very nice mix of both locals and out-of-towners, and I must say, Rupee definitely attracts the females. As he always says, "Love you allll."

Dr. Jay made his way to stage to greet the crowd and introduce Rupee around one-ish, and then the action started as you heard Rupee's voice in the background singing... "I see a crowd out there that wants to raise their flags... I see a crowd that's got festival fever bad... whether Barbados, Antigua, Grenada, Jamaica or Trinidad... everybody jump... wave." Before you knew it, Rupee and the Dot Com band were in strong first gear. The Atlantic Recording artist nicely blended his older hits with his newer releases which kept the crowd in the swing of things. Big shout out to the talented and lovely sisters of 2Ntrigue, who are part of the Dot Com band. Somewhere, in the middle of the show, Rupee dedicated his song Woman I'll Always Be There [video clip] to his mom (who passed away), and the song and it's message genuinely touched the fans. This being the first time seeing Rupee in a full length concert, I will have to say, great overall performance. Being accustomed to seeing him in a guest performer role, this was a welcoming change, watching him in full control of his own band, and more so, his own crowd! Of course, there is always room for improvement for Rupee and his Dot Com band, which will come over time as they continue to perform and grow.

After a solid length performance, Rupee left the stage, but the fans were yelling out for more... and of course not having sung a couple of his most loved tunes, he made his way back on stage to sing classic (secret weapon) tunes like Jump, Ice Cream, and everybody's favorite, What happens in de Party. The ladies couldn't help themselves from singing out the response... "Stays in de Party!"

Rupee Autographing for the FansRupee, being the humble entertainer, apologized to the fans before finally leaving the stage for the drama which occurred back in November 2004 at Fall Fest, where he was forced to cut his performance short (like after the 2nd or 3rd song I heard) as the show was locked off early. Now, with a solid three weeks of daily bookings, one would think that after the show, the band would quickly pack up and head back to the hotel to rest up. Not Rupee! While photographers and fans anxiously waited backstage to meet up with Rupee, he was busy front stage autographing for his fans. Music was turned off, and bouncers were asking everyone to make their way to the exits, but Rupee was still busy signing away, conversing and taking pictures with his admirers. He did not leave the building until every, and I mean every fan or person asking for his time was satisfied! His Dot Com band long left in the group's bus after the show, leaving the down to earth performer to catch a ride home with the promoters. Talk about an artist that knows were he comes from and truly appreciates his fans, and makes sure to let them know it.

Reviews of Rupee 1 on 1 tour in Toronto - "What De People Say"
"Last night was the bomb..I don't know when I had so fun in a long time. You were excellent and the music was even better. We had a great time and did not want it to end. Have fun on the rest of your tour and we will see you for Crop over. I liked the way you came into the crowd as most musician do not do that. You are an exception to the rule and that is why we love you so."
"Just wanted to say how wonderful it was to meet you in Toronto. It was a pleasure. You were GREAT. I came there from Detroit (via Jamaica). Your song to your mother touched me. It is so nice to see men who have such love for their mothers and respects women. I hope to see you again..soon."

"It ain't have words to describe how Kool Haus was lassnite!! Rupee's performance was so nice. He really put on a show. The best thing was..the auto graph session at the end, I know for a fact, Rupee did not leave until all his fans got a signed picture. Now that is a true artist."

Machel Montano @ Fire Fete'05Machel & Xtatik brought De Heat to Fire Fete
Posted 03-30-05 ~ Charlene Allen (Trini Jungle Juice)

It was Easter Long Weekend in Toronto and that only meant one thing... De Fire Fete was upon us! Machel Montano & Xtatik were finally here! After much media hype, hoards of West Indians and other Soca music lovers braced freezing temperatures and flocked to Koolhaus, many hoping of relive the Carnival 2K5 experience, where as some came just to get into "Spring Fever" mode... Xtatik style!

DJ's used their skills to frenzy the crowd mixing old with new with the occasional moment to cool down by switching beats into reggae, dancehall & hip-hop. Machel & Xtatik appeared on stage around 1:30 AM, and wap wap, de party start! A sea of flags from all Caribbean islands appeared in unison - moving to every command. Doug E Fresh @ Fire Fete'05The legendary rapper, Doug E Fresh took the crowd to yet another level with his beat boxing skills as the crowd sung along, "It's all because of you... burrp buurrp... I'm feeling sad and blue..." Doug E then brought the house down when Machel asked him to do his infamous "beat boxing" Trini style. They then combined to perform their big song We Not Giving Up, which was recorded live for the song's video. Special guest, Lil Vicious also made his way to the stage to perform Doug E Fresh and his classic hit, Freaks.

Machel & Xtatik then continued their performance, reverting back to his previous hits... then on to current... wait was that ah YEAH YEAH! OMG not BIG TRUCK! It was truly a site to experience... AGAIN! All though there have been rumors of Machel planning to go solo, his performance only reiterated that Machel & Xtatik were here to stay and if you still have any doubts, speak to one of the 2500+ people who attended!

Reviews of the Fire Fete - "What De People Say"
Hats off to J.V.R Entertainment and Dynasty Entertainment for a successful event. Well promoted and the event ran as planned.
Great performance by Machel & Xtatik, and other guest performers.
Huge disappointment with the DJ's and their music selections. It's a Soca fete, yes play reggae and hip-hop, but not excessive! Too many 2005 Soca tunes did not play! The DJ to come on after Xtatik performed sent the crowd to coat check, when they were begging to be hung from the roof top!
Major disappointment in all Trini women in attendance for not representin' for Machel's get mad and crazy wining contest! Wazz dat one! The Guyanese girl deserve to hold the title on the night. Large up de Guyanese posse!

We heard the talk, but wanted to be sure it was true before posting, but after reading and hearing from some reliable sources, it's for real... Kes Diffenthaller has left Imij & Co.! Kes and his brothers, Hans (drummer) and Jan (guitarist), have left the band, along with bassist Riad Boochoon. They are forming a new band called KES. What's next for the remainder of Imij & Co., which includes founder and guitarist, Joey Ng Wai, and frontline singers "Ghetto Flex" (Hilton Dazell Jr) and "Michelle X" (Michelle Xavier), is still up in the air. We heard that KES is due to make its debut sometime in May at Club Zen, Trinidad in a concert which features Sugar Ray. We wish nothing but positive vibes for everyone.

Sherwayne WinchesterShurwayne does it again! 2005 Road March Champ
Posted 02-09-05 ~ Andre C. Choo Quan (Trini Jungle Juice)

I can still hear the DJs in my head, "bounce, bounce, bounce..." after taking a poll from the mas revellers as to which tune to play to cross all major judging venues and the main stage in the Queen's Park Savannah on Carnival Monday and Tuesday. There was no close competition to Shurwayne's "Dead or Alive!" What everyone referred to as the remix to his 2004 Road March hit, "Look The Band Coming", was played over and over again on the road. You got your taste of Destra's "Fly", Machel Montano's "Madder than Dat", KMC's "First Experience" and Iwer George's "Ease The Tension", but none were even in close contention to "Dead or Alive". There's definitely something about that iron beating at the start of the song that raises one's pores and gets you geared up to jump up and wave. Congrats to Shurwayne!

Onika Bostic 1979 - 2004
Posted 12-19-04

Onika, 24, sustained massive head and spinal injuries in a car accident on the Eastern Main Road in Laventille, Trinidad back on the 11th December. About a week later, after being kept in the ICU at Port of Spain General Hospital, she passed away around 9:30 pm on Sunday 19th December. Again, I cannot even stress what a true sweetheart Onika was. She was one of the most down to earth persons that I knew in the Soca arena. Her funeral is currently set for Thursday 23rd December, which would have been her 25th birthday.

We dedicate to our young and talented Soca princess, who has moved on to a better place, her latest hit song All Is Yours. Thank you for the great memories! Our deepest condolences go out to Onika's family and friends. May she rest in peace. Love, The TriniJungleJuice.com Team.
