Chaguaramas, Trinidad (Sonique Solutions) – Nowadays the month of August has become synonymous with big band launches as Trinidad and Tobago’s top mas makers choose this time to present their brand new costume themes and sections to the public. Not to be outdone by any of its competition, the ever popular Island People Mas once again combined forces with major cultural supporter Bmobile to recently reveal its Carnival 2011 presentation “Shades of the Universe” to the mas loving community.

The highly anticipated affair took place at popular entertainment venue Pier 1 which by all accounts was the perfect open air location to enjoy the ‘organized bacchanal’. Island People which has become known for its creative, thematic and innovative productions is an entity that seems to work ceaselessly throughout the entire year. After producing their recent summer event ‘Caution’ and churning out a costume section for Barbados’ Cropover the IP team has gone full steam ahead into 2011 with their 6th mas presentation.

Following the media launch which was held at an upstairs conference room, all attention was directed towards the stage where the main presentation was carded to take place. The members of the media and specially invited guests who were given a sneak peek at the costumes were all anxious to see the “Shades of the Universe” collection in its entirety.

As excited attendees danced to the music selections of top DJs and fashionably late feters entered the venue one could not help but notice how the seaside setting of Pier 1 was quickly transformed into space age surroundings. The distinctive choice and usage of bright yellow, green and orange lights as well as different hues of purple brought out the presentations theme by creating that unique intergalactic aura.

The onstage main production was a true testament to the theatrical approach that has become a trademark of Island People’s band launches. The display of costumes was introduced by veteran T&T actor Raymond Choo Kong who appeared in a dramatic video sketch on a huge onstage screen. This was followed by a thrilling display of lights and smoke.

The costumed models were accompanied by characters in skin tight latex costumes who at times appeared to be making choreographed movements as well as staccato motions in an almost android like manner. Much to the excitement and entertainment of the female patrons was the inclusion of muscular, speedo clad male models who immersed themselves in silver tubs of a green, slimy substance.

According to Island People’s bandleader Dane Lewis, “Shades of the Universe” is one of their best presentations. Lewis stated, “All of the things we have learnt over the years are evident in this presentation”. When asked about the genesis of 2011’s theme, he said, “When you look at the universe and all the things that are occurring you can see a distinct variety of events”.

A representative for Island People Mas’ sponsor Bmobile shared, “The relationship between our company and Island People is a good alignment, much like us they are a creative and sufficient entity”.

The completion of the onstage production was capped off with an exhilarating performance by Soca’s Rookie of The Year, Swappi who thrilled the masses with hit songs and onstage antics. The beautiful Bmobile girls were on hand to enjoy the festivities alongside contented party goers and notables including Soca stars Patrice Roberts, Ricardo Drue, Anslem Douglas and Benjai, media personality Jeanille Bonterre and West Indies cricketer Dwayne Bravo.

The 2011 theme which is described by IP’s creative director Marlon Grant as being inspired by the Divine Creator boasts section names such as: Quasar, Forever Orbit, Meteor Burst, Galactic Dust, Orion's Starbirth, Nebular's Hypnosis, Vega, M51, Mars Bliss, Lunar Cycle, Zune and Saturn Sanctuary.

With this latest showing it is evident that the folks at Island People Mas are more than ready for Carnival 2K11 and with T&T’s # 1 mobile network Bmobile as a tag team partner, they are sure to be a dominant force on the streets of Port-Of-Spain for Carnival Monday and Tuesday.
